Junior Structural Engineer – Buildings

Calgary

LEX3 is looking for a curious, motivated, and practically minded Junior Engineer to join our Buildings Engineering Team and grow with us through hands-on involvement in meaningful projects. In this role, you will gain exposure to the full life cycle of buildings work—from project pursuits through to construction completion. Working under the guidance of experienced structural engineers, you will contribute to the analysis, design, assessment, and construction support of building projects across Alberta.

This is an opportunity to build strong technical fundamentals, work directly with multidisciplinary teams, and develop through practical experience, mentorship, and coaching.

As a Junior Structural Engineer – Buildings, your responsibilities may include:

Structural Analysis and Design

- Perform structural analysis and design of new buildings, additions, renovations, modernizations, and restorations using wood, structural steel, reinforced concrete, and masonry.
- Prepare calculations and support design development for foundations, gravity systems, and lateral-load-resisting systems in accordance with applicable Canadian building codes and material standards.
- Assist with structural condition assessments, field reviews, investigations, and the development of repair or reinforcement recommendations.
- Prepare clear design calculations, sketches, markups, technical memoranda, and input for drawings and specifications using sound engineering judgment under appropriate supervision.
- Assist with construction-document preparation, including drawings, specifications, and tender or contract documentation.

Project Coordination
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, technologists, architects, other engineering disciplines, contractors, and clients.
- Communicate design assumptions, technical findings, progress, and coordination items clearly in meetings, emails, reports, and other project documentation.

Construction Support
- Support contract administration by reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to requests for information, and documenting site observations under the direction of the project engineer.
- Participate in construction-site visits and field reviews, which will include travel within Calgary and to project sites elsewhere in Alberta.

Our successful candidate will have:

- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering,



structural engineering, Applied Sciences, or a closely related engineering discipline from a Canadian-accredited engineering program, or an equivalent degree recognized for APEGA registration.
- Registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.), or eligible to register as an E.I.T. upon employment.
- 0 to 4 years of structural engineering experience. New graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada and able to work from LEX3’s Calgary office within the requirements of the position.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to transportation for site visits.

Preferred Qualifications
- Academic, co-op, internship, summer, or professional experience related to building structures.
- Exposure to structural analysis and design of wood, steel, reinforced concrete, or masonry systems.
- Familiarity with Canadian building codes, structural design standards, structural analysis software, and drafting or building information modelling (BIM) tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication, organization, attention to detail, problem-solving, and ability to work collaboratively.

Time Commitment / Term This is a full time, permanent position (40 hours per week).

Location The position is required in our Calgary office. Our flexible work environment allows employees to work from home up to two days per week if preferred.
