Job Summary The Kitchen Assistant supports food preparation, meal service, cleaning, inventory and delivery activities at the assigned Food Service Hub. The role prepares hot and cold meals as directed, maintains a safe and sanitary work environment, serves students and, when required, transports meals and supplies to assigned schools using PEISFP delivery vehicles.

Roles and Responsibilities

- Participate in inventory control and ordering as requested by the Kitchen Manager
- Prepare hot and cold meals from scratch as directed by the Kitchen Manager
- Serve meals to students and collect payment
- Clean and maintain the kitchen, equipment and work areas in accordance with applicable food safety, occupational health and safety, hygiene, sanitation and PEISFP requirements
- Support safe and timely meal deliveries from the centralized kitchen to assigned schools, operating PEISFP delivery vehicles when required
- Other duties as required

Education Requirements

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current food safety certification

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Ability to lift, carry, load and unload meal containers, supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs, with reasonable accommodation where required by law
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and inventory control
- Knowledge of food-service practices, including food preparation, quality standards and presentation techniques
- Ability to follow routine instructions and safety procedures
- Well-developed organizational and time management skills
- Possess good interpersonal skills and a strong customer service orientation
- Enthusiastic and motivated team player

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

- Regular standing, walking, bending, reaching and repetitive food-preparation and cleaning activities in a commercial kitchen environment
- Ability to lift, carry, load and unload meal containers, supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs, with reasonable accommodation where required by law




- Regular exposure to hot and cold temperatures, kitchen equipment, food allergens, wet or slippery surfaces, and outdoor weather conditions during deliveries
- Work schedule may vary within program needs. Work schedules, meal breaks and overtime will be administered in accordance with PEI employment standards and organizational policy

The PEI School Food Program offers a market-competitive salary of $20.49 per hour (+4% vacation pay). The standard work week is Monday to Friday. For this position, hours will be on an as-needed basis with no set scheduled hours of employment. Contact for scheduling will be made as far in advance as possible, although the employees may be contacted on the day they are requested to work. Working months: September- June.
