Anderson Aylwin Begg & Co. Legal Services is the largest paralegal firm in Durham Region, specializing in Landlord Tenant Board and Small Claims Court litigation. We are dedicated to providing exceptional legal support and advocacy to our clients through a team of skilled and motivated professionals. This position is intended to fill a maternity leave vacancy.
The role is suited to a strong advocate with residential tenancy and litigation experience who is comfortable appearing before the Landlord and Tenant Board and Small Claims Court and taking ownership of files from initial instructions through resolution.
Position Overview The role combines front-line advocacy, file carriage, client communication, drafting, and internal legal file management. The successful candidate will be expected to exercise sound judgment, manage a files and ensure files progress efficiently and accurately through each stage including;
· Represent clients at hearings before the Landlord and Tenant Board and Small Claims Court, including related proceedings and settlement discussions.
· Draft, review, file, and serve notices of termination, Landlord and Tenant Board applications, pleadings, and other litigation documents.
· Manage files throughout their lifecycle, including monitoring deadlines, diarizing important dates, identifying outstanding items, and ensuring required follow-ups are completed.
· Prepare, organize, review, and submit disclosure, L1 Information Update Forms, and other hearing materials.
· Communicate directly and promptly with clients regarding outstanding information, applications,
hearings, procedural developments, and next steps.
· Prepare documents required to enforce Landlord and Tenant Board orders through the Court Enforcement Office (Sheriff), where applicable.
· Provide guidance and support to junior staff and legal support professionals, and assist with ongoing files, projects, and practice-management needs as required.
Qualifications
· Valid P1 licence and good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
· At least 2 years of relevant paralegal experience, preferably involving residential tenancy, Landlord and Tenant Board proceedings, and/or civil litigation.
· Experience drafting notices of termination, preparing Landlord and Tenant Board applications, and appearing before the Board.
· Strong working knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, Landlord and Tenant Board practice and procedure, and applicable litigation processes.
· Exceptional organizational and file-management skills, including the ability to manage a busy caseload, competing deadlines, and numerous follow-ups.
· Ability to work independently, take ownership of assigned matters, identify issues requiring follow-up or escalation, and carry files through to completion.
· Strong legal drafting, advocacy, client-management, written and oral communication, and time-management skills.
· Sound judgment, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to produce high-quality work under time pressure.
· A professional, practical, responsive, and solutions-focused approach to clients and colleagues.
· Experience working with institutional landlords, property managers, non-profit or community housing providers, or clients with significant residential portfolios is an asset.
· Familiarity with legal practice-management software such as Clio or PCLaw; proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel is an asset.
