We are seeking a reliable, physically capable and encouraging person to provide one-to-one exercise and rehabilitation support to an articulate and engaging 36-year-old man with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. He uses a manual wheelchair and is currently a successful post-secondary student.

This position may be particularly suitable for a current student or graduate in kinesiology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation, health sciences or a related field. A formal physiotherapy-assistant diploma is not required.

Responsibilities The successful applicant will carry out a clearly designed, hands-on rehabilitation program that includes:

- A structured and physically active exercise program to improve strength, flexibility, coordination and independence
- Assistance with transfers, positioning and mobility
- Wheelchair-skills practice
- A structured swimming program
- Limited assistance with personal care as required

Training and ongoing consultation will be provided.

Location The position is based in a private home approximately four minutes by car or bus from the Armdale Rotary in Halifax.

Hours

One or two three-hour sessions per week. Current possibilities include:

- Tuesday afternoon or evening
- Thursday evening
- Friday mid-afternoon
- Sunday (late morning - evening)

$28–$30 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications The successful applicant will have:

- Excellent physical strength, health and stamina.



The client weighs approximately 133 pounds and requires hands-on assistance with transfers, lifting and exercises.
- Current or completed post-secondary studies in kinesiology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation, health sciences or a related field
- Previous hands-on experience working with adults or children with significant physical disabilities
- Comfort assisting with limited personal-care needs
- Creativity, initiative, patience and solid problem-solving skills
- The ability to follow an established program, incorporate feedback and work collaboratively
- A valid driver’s licence and good driving record
- Reliable transportation to the work location
- Current residence in the Halifax Regional Municipality
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada
