Job Information Overview The Edmonton Forest School Society is a not-for-profit that connects children to nature, themselves and others through delivery of forest school programming situated in Edmonton’s natural spaces. The EFSS is seeking a part-time executive director to lead the strategic direction for the EFSS in alignment with its Vision, Mission, and Values.

This position is hybrid (mostly remote with some face-to-face meetings / initiatives) and is based in Edmonton, Alberta. The successful candidate will report to the Board of Governors, and will have oversight (financial, operational) of a small number of staff who directly run programming.

Candidate Profile

This role requires an individual who can maintain a flexible operational posture, including willingness to occasionally adjust weekly schedules to accommodate evening or weekend special events, open houses, or urgent parental communications.

The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has the following skills / competencies:

- Good organizational oversight and ability to support human resources, policy, risk assessment/mitigation and strategic planning within the context of a not-for-profit
- Experience working with or leading not-for-profit organizations
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Experience in education (public school, outdoor education, etc) is an asset.
- Valid Class 5 drivers licence and access to a reliable personal vehicle that can safely house and transport organizational supplies, site kits and event materials as needed.

Responsibilities The Executive Director’s (ED) role is to guide and shape the strategic management of the EFSS.



The ED reports directly to the Board and supports organizational governance and provides and leads implementation of direction(s) to grow and sustain EFSS. The ED will help shape how EFSS will attain its mission and ensure that EFSS operates within its expressed values to achieve its organizational goals. Internally, the ED will:

- manage human resources;
- oversee finances and budgeting;
- help implement fundraising; and,
- inform and shape policies and procedures.

Externally, the ED will:
- be the visible face / spokesperson for the organization
- coordinate with the City of Edmonton and partner organizations

This role will oversee the following: Staff and Human Resources Management
- Lead efforts in recruiting, training, and retaining employees.
- Provide consistent leadership, mentorship, oversight, and formal performance reviews for the Weekly Programs Director and the Site School Director.
- Respond to HR inquiries from the Board and Committees

Board Support
- Collaborate with the Board on compilation of monthly executive reporting metrics, including but not limited to cash flow, enrollment, staffing, insurance, payroll/ benefits/ WCB, equity, diversity and inclusion; and any matters related to the Society’s activities.
- Attend scheduled quarterly Board meetings.
- Support the Board of Directors in coordinating the AGM, and in meeting all regulatory and reporting requirements.

Financial Stewardship and Fund Development




- Work with the Board to prepare annual budgets
- Collect and submit financial records to the Society’s bookkeeper and oversee the bookkeeper’s activities regarding payroll, benefits, WCB, and honorariums.
- Work with staff and the Board on grant applications and funding opportunities to strengthen and improve the governance and programming of EFSS.

Administration
- Maintain records concerning staffing, operations, facilities (if any), enrollment, finances/cash flow, insurance, and payroll/benefits/WCB
- Mitigate organizational risks, manage insurance policy renewals, and guarantee compliance under the Alberta Societies Act.

Correspondence and Communications
- Champion the public profile of the Edmonton Forest School Society within the broader community.
- Oversee high-level stakeholder communications, brand messaging, and community partnership networking.

Operations and Employee Management
- Serve as the primary, professional liaison between the staff and the Board.
- Act as the final internal escalation point for complex HR grievances, parental conflicts, or contract disputes.

Considerations Currently, this role is part-time (funded for 6 hours / week) but is scalable with securement of additional funding. Compensation is currently ~ $25 per hour – although this wage could be negotiated through funding securement.
