PRESS OPERATOR (3rd Shift)
Print Field: Packaging (Folding Cartons)
Reporting to: Production Operations Director
Start Date: 2-4 Weeks
Location: Woodbridge (Hwy 427 / Hwy 7)
Hours: 3 days per week x 12-hour shifts
Position Summary:
The Press Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining sheet-fed offset printing presses to produce high-quality printed materials. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety, quality, and production efficiency.
Below is a general list of the standard responsibilities. All other responsibilities not listed below will be assigned by the supervisor.
Press Operation
- Set up, operate, and monitor offset printing presses according to job specifications
- Read and interpret job tickets, layouts, and color proofs
- Adjust ink, water balance, registration, and impression to meet quality standards
- Ensure accurate color matching using densitometers and spectrophotometers
Quality Control and Compliance
- Inspect printed sheets for color accuracy, registration, and defects
- Maintain consistent print quality throughout production runs
- Troubleshoot printing issues such as streaking, ghosting, or color variation
- Ensure jobs meet internal quality standards and customer requirements.
- Assist team and participate with transition into SQF QMS system.
- Follow SQF, GMP, food packaging, pharmaceutical, or other regulated packaging requirements as applicable.
- Participate in quality audits and corrective action processes.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication of the press
- Identify mechanical or operational issues and coordinate repairs when needed
- Replace blankets, rollers, plates, and other consumables
Production & Efficiency
- Meet production schedules while minimizing waste and downtime
- Optimize press speed and setup times
- Accurately track materials usage and production data
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all workplace safety procedures and press-specific operating guidelines
- Maintain a clean and organized press area
- Comply with company policies and environmental regulations
Other:
- Inspect finished product for quality, dimensional accuracy, and defects
- Perform make-ready and job changeovers efficiently to minimize downtime
- Troubleshoot mechanical or operational issues during production
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication of equipment
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, production records and job documentation
- Follow all safety procedures, lock-out/tag-out policies, and housekeeping standards
- Collaborate with supervisors, maintenance, and quality teams to meet production targets
Communication & Collaboration:
- Work as a team and be one of the main internal contacts for assigned jobs.
- Communicate clearly with sales, other production staff, and plant management.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Proven experience operating offset printing presses
- Solid understanding of offset printing processes, inks, and substrates
- Ability to read job tickets, technical manuals, and colour proofs
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Technical or trade school training in printing technology
- Knowledge of color management systems (G7, ISO standards)
- Forklift certification (nice to have)
Working Conditions:
