Xtra Magazine, an award-winning digital magazine covering culture and politics through an LGBTQ2S+ lens, is hiring a contract Social Video Producer to level up our presence on short-form video platforms including TikTok and YouTube Shorts. We are looking for a nimble collaborator with a passion for all things video and LGBTQ2S+ issues, along with a proven track record of producing high-impact social video content.

This is a part time freelance position, reporting to the Managing Editor.

What will you do?

- Produce quick turn-around social video content covering LGBTQ2S+ news, culture and analysis as aligned with Xtra’s editorial mandate
- Pitch, write, edit and promote social video content on TikTok, YouTube and Xtra’s website
- Keep up with emerging trends in short-form social video and platforms
- Collaborate with the larger Xtra editorial team on multimedia content opportunities

- Who are you? The ideal candidate for this role has:

- A proven track record of producing high-impact social video content
- Deep familiarity with TikTok and YouTube Shorts, as well as video editing software
- A willingness to learn and adapt
- A sense of urgency and ability to work quickly and accurately and respond to the news cycle




- Comfort working remotely and collaborating remotely within a small team
- Strong attention to detail and news judgement
- Strong familiarity with LGBTQ2S+ issues in Canada and the U.S.
- On-camera experience/comfort welcome but not required—please indicate in your application if your preference is to be in front of the camera at times or behind the camera only
- A background in journalism, journalistic ethics and best practices preferred
- Excellent time management skills
- A willingness to work with staff and freelancers

This is a part-time freelance position, $35 CAD/hr for a total of 21 hrs/week. The work can be done remotely from anywhere in Canada.
