Sound Design Instructor

Recording Arts Canada (RAC) is seeking a part-time instructor to teach Sound Design in English at its Montreal campus.

This course focuses on developing students’ ability to create, manipulate, and integrate sound within a production environment. Students learn to use digital audio tools and sound design techniques to create original sounds and develop audio for a variety of creative applications, including music, video, and animation.

Main Topics Covered

- Audio cleaning and editing;
- Virtual instruments and signal routing;
- Sound synthesis;
- Additive, subtractive, wavetable, FM, and granular synthesis;
- Objective-based sound design;
- Experimental music and creative sound design;
- Audio manipulation and sampling;
- Percussion design and resampling;
- Creation of original sound libraries and personal creation packs;
- Sound design for video;
- Sound design for animation.

Responsibilities

- Prepare and deliver theoretical and practical classes in English;
- Clearly explain sound design concepts and demonstrate their practical application;
- Provide hands-on demonstrations using digital audio production and sound design tools;
- Guide students during exercises, projects, and practical work periods;
- Evaluate quizzes, theoretical and practical exams, and projects according to established criteria;
- Provide students with clear, constructive, and timely feedback;
- Monitor student attendance, academic results, and overall progress;




- Collaborate with RAC’s academic and administrative teams;
- Follow the established course outline, schedule, evaluation requirements, and academic policies.

Qualifications

- Minimum of five (5) years of relevant qualified experience in sound design, audio production, music production, or a related field;
- Strong knowledge of sound synthesis, including additive, subtractive, wavetable, FM, and granular synthesis;
- Solid knowledge of audio editing, sampling, sound manipulation, virtual instruments, and signal routing;
- Experience creating and manipulating original sounds for music, video, animation, or other audiovisual productions;
- Proficiency with professional digital audio workstations (DAWs) and sound design tools;
- Ability to explain technical and creative concepts in a clear, structured, and accessible manner;
- Fluency in English;
- Strong organizational skills, reliability, and ability to meet deadlines;
- Ability to work effectively with students of varying levels of experience;
- Previous teaching, training, or mentoring experience is considered an asset;
- French-English bilingualism is considered an asset.

Position Type Part-time teaching position, in person at RAC’s Montreal campus.
