Animal Control / Municipal Law Enforcement Officer I

(Up to 14 month contract)

We are looking for a highly motivated professional to contribute to the Enforcement division of the Corporate Services Department.

Reporting to the Manager of Enforcement, this position will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring compliance with the Town By-laws with particular specialization in the Animal Control By-law.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Enforce municipal by-laws including the animal control by-law, and related legislation through education, investigation, voluntary compliance, orders, and prosecution where appropriate.
- Investigate and respond to complaints involving animal welfare concerns, stray or lost animals, animals running at large, aggressive animals, dog bites, nuisance concerns, and other animal related community safety issues.
- Provide humane wildlife co-existence support, including public education, conflict prevention advice, and, where authorized, the safe relocation of wildlife on public property where welfare concerns exist.
- Conduct proactive patrols and respond to complaints regarding by-law compliance
- Safely capture, contain, handle, transport, return, impound, or arrange appropriate veterinary, shelter, or other disposition of animals using approved equipment and safe animal handling practices.
- Issue Orders to Restrain pursuant to the Animal Control By-law, Animal Control Orders to Comply, warnings, and Provincial Offences Act offence notices; prepare and lay charges when warranted.
- Maintain accurate and confidential investigation records, occurrence reports, photographs, witness statements, correspondence, orders, animal intake information, and evidentiary files.
- Collect, preserve, label,



and securely maintain evidence; prepare disclosure materials and attend Provincial Offences Court or other proceedings to provide testimony and support municipal prosecutions.
- Work collaboratively with the Enforcement Division, Municipal Prosecutors, emergency services, police, veterinarians, shelters, animal welfare organizations, and other internal and external partners.
- Provide operational, investigative, enforcement, inspection, public education, and administrative support to the Enforcement Division and related municipal enforcement functions, as assigned.
- Inspect, clean, maintain, and safely operate assigned vehicles, animal capture equipment, communications equipment, personal protective equipment, and other tools.
- Comply with health and safety legislation, municipal policies, infection prevention practices, safe work procedures, and personal protective equipment requirements.
- Perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions, including walking, standing, driving, lifting, carrying, bending, restraining animals, and operating required equipment.

Key Competencies and Qualifications

- The successful candidate will possess a post-secondary education in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Technology, Police Foundations, Law & Security or equivalent program.
- At least one year of related Animal Control/Enforcement experience, preferably in a Municipal Environment.
- Successful completion of the Municipal Law Enforcement Officers’ Association Part 1 Foundations program is an asset.
- MLEO Certification as well as ongoing membership with the Municipal Law Enforcement Officers’ Association is preferred.




- Knowledge of the Towns by-laws; provincial and federal statutes and regulations; rules of evidence; property rights; Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation; Provincial Offences Act; and the Municipal Act.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; judgment to exercise proper and full authority in a judicious service-oriented manner; the ability to diffuse hostile members of the public; and possess strong conflict resolution skills.
- Candidates must be able to promote a culture of inclusiveness and work with a diverse population of employees, participants, agencies and the public.
- Must be proficient with information technology; have a valid Ontario class G driver’s license in good standing; and be available to work wide-ranging shifts, including days, nights, evenings and weekends.
- A Vulnerable Sector Screening will be required upon hire.

The position offers an hourly range of $42.61 to $51.80 (2026 rates) based on 35 hours per week plus a competitive benefit package. The position currently offers a four day work-week, fully resourced field equipment and ongoing training opportunities for our officers.
