Position Summary This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Career & Professional Development. The Director of Experiential Learning plans and implements strategies to increase DU students’ participation in experiential learning and supporting students’ professional development during college based on student needs and workforce trends. As part of this effort, the Director oversees a best-in-class student employment program, training supervisors to provide excellent employment experiences and overseeing high quality learning experiences for student employees.
They provide structure and support for funding and tracking of internships as a key aspect of experiential learning.
Additionally, this leader will manage data collection efforts on key metrics to assess program success. The Director of Experiential Learning will coordinate with critical campus partners such as Financial Aid, Human Resources, and the 4D Experience to ensure strong alignment across many stakeholder units. The Director functions as a key member of the Career & Professional Development leadership team and will hire and supervise an Assistant Director as well as student employees.
Essential Functions
Strategic Leadership of Experiential Learning
- Develop and implement a high-quality experiential learning program at the University of Denver in line with the Career & Professional Development strategic plan, including a focus on student employment and internships
- Hire, train, and supervise an Assistant Director of Experiential Learning.
- Consult with staff and student supervisors across campus to help solve problems and answer questions regarding student employment best practices.
- Manage and grow funding for access to summer internships in coordination with University Advancement and the Employer Connections team.
- Oversee student employment job fair to aid campus departments in filling available positions while creating awareness for students.
Technology, Data and Reporting
- Create protocols for utilizing the career development technology for experiential learning and determine efficient workflows for ensuring a positive experience for students, employers and supervisors.
- Collect and track student employment and internship data including engagement, job postings, and applicant numbers. Work with the Director of CPD Business Information and Systems to research correlation of student outcomes and experiential learning participation.
- Submit annual reports on progress to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Career & Professional Development. Present progress to the Chancellor’s cabinet as requested.
Human Resources Operations
- Lead daily operations and execution of student employment human resources functions such as workforce planning, recruiting & hiring, onboarding, compensation reviews, employee relations, and performance evaluations.
- Oversee the performance management processes for student employees and interns to support qualified growth and development.
- Act as a strategic partner with Financial Aid, Office of Graduate Education,
and Human Resources and Inclusive Community to ensure cohesive alignment and guidance with institutional processes and guidance as well as facilitating resource access for students and employees.
Training & Professional Development
- Identify key competencies for experiential learning development as well as ensure programmatic framework positively impacts learning outcomes.
- Develop curriculum and present to supervisors on developing student employees and providing high quality experiences as well as comprehensive policies and processes to include recruiting & hiring, on-boarding, evaluation, separation, and rewards and recognition.
- Oversee student employee and supervisor orientation that prepares students to be successful in their campus roles while setting goals to enhance professional skills needed to be successful in campus jobs and beyond.
- Oversee the development of professional development programs for students to enhance professional skills needed to be successful in campus jobs and beyond.
Partnerships & University Citizenship
- Partner closely with divisional leadership, managers, supervisors, and employees across campus to improve working relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and employee retention.
- Communicate with campus leaders and student supervisors on program goals and successes.
- Coordinate with other leaders in experiential learning and High Impact Practices across campus to track and facilitate student development.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong background and understanding of training and development
- Knowledge of student development and/or student career development
- Strong relationship management skills
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to making experiential learning accessible for all students
- Demonstrated expertise building new relationships and maintaining them with employers, students, faculty, and administrators
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification)
- 5 years of related experience in human resources, career services, student affairs, or a related field Supervisory experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in human resources, communications, student affairs, or a related field
- 2 years of experience supervising professional staff
- Relationship management experience
- Experience in visioning, planning, designing, and implementing innovative programs
- Experience in strategic planning and successful execution of strategic objectives
- Experience creating and delivering high quality and engaging trainings for a variety of stakeholders

Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m.
- 4:30 p.m., some nights and weekends as required

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 13.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $95,000-$99,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
