Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented DFM & Estimating Engineer to serve as our primary technical gatekeeper during the quoting process. In this critical role, you will analyze incoming customer 3D models, CAD drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) to identify cost drivers, flag non-manufacturable design features, and propose manufacturability improvements before a quote ever goes out the door. You will sit at the intersection of engineering, sales, and shop operations—ensuring our quotes are accurate, competitive, and technically sound while protecting our shop floor from high-risk or unproduceable designs.

Key Responsibilities





- Evaluate customer 3D models (STEP/IGES/SolidWorks) and 2D engineering drawings (GD&T;) across CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and complex welded/mechanical assemblies.
- Flag non-manufacturable features, tight tolerances outside industry standards, deep pockets/thin walls, invalid bend radii, clearance/interference issues, or obsolete materials/hardware.
- Determine optimal manufacturing methods and establish detailed routings (operations, setup times, run times, tooling, outside processing like heat treat/plating).
- Draft clear DFM feedback reports for customers, proposing design adjustments that reduce production costs and improve lead times without compromising part functionality.
- Review complex multi-level BOMs to audit hardware, hardware shank codes, standard commercial items, and raw material yields; collaborate with purchasing to estimate outside service and hardware costs.
- Work closely with Manufacturing Engineers and Shop Floor Leads to compare actual production cycle times against estimated quotes to continuously refine quoting standards.

Required Qualifications

- 3–5+ years in manufacturing engineering, estimating, or technical quoting within a precision contract manufacturing environment.




- Strong practical understanding of manufacturing processes—specifically CNC milling/turning, sheet metal forming/laser cutting, welding, and mechanical assembly.
- High proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and advanced blueprint reading, including ASME Y14.5 / GD&T.;
- Exceptional ability to spot tiny discrepancies between 3D models, 2D drawings, and customer BOMs before they turn into costly shop-floor scrap.
- Understanding of labor rates, machine hour rates, material margins, overhead calculation, and outside vendor processing costs.

Preferred Qualifications

- Direct experience in quick-turn, high-mix job-shop environments.
- Familiarity with digital quoting tools or ERP quoting modules (e.g., Paperless Parts, ProShop, JobBOSS)
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or equivalent combination of hands-on shop experience and technical education.
