About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated, organized, and experienced Assistant Supervisor to join our licensed child care centre.
The Assistant Supervisor works closely with the Supervisor and administrative team to support the day-to-day operation of the centre. This position combines program leadership, staff support, regulatory compliance, family communication, and administrative responsibilities.
The successful candidate will be a strong communicator and collaborative leader who understands Ontario’s licensed child care sector and is committed to providing high-quality, inclusive, play-based programming for children and families.
Key Responsibilities
Program & Staff Leadership
- Support the Supervisor with the daily operation of the child care centre.
- Provide guidance, coaching, and support to RECEs, ECAs, and other program staff.
- Help coordinate staff schedules, room coverage, breaks, and ratio requirements.
- Support staff onboarding, orientation, training, and ongoing professional development.
- Assist with staff meetings, performance discussions, and implementation of centre policies and procedures.
- Promote a respectful, qualified, collaborative, and inclusive workplace culture.
- Step into program rooms or provide coverage when operationally required.
Licensing, Compliance & Quality
- Support compliance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 (CCEYA) and applicable regulations.
- Assist with maintaining required documentation, attendance records, staff files, program records, health and safety documentation, and licensing requirements.
- Support preparation for Ministry of Education licensing inspections and follow up on required items.
- Assist with implementation and monitoring of centre policies, procedures, emergency practices, health and safety requirements, and serious occurrence procedures.
- Support programming consistent with Ontario's How Does Learning Happen? pedagogy.
- Help ensure appropriate staff-to-child ratios and supervision requirements are maintained throughout the day.
Children & Families
- Build positive and professional relationships with children and families.
- Support enrolment, child transitions, tours, orientations, and family communication.
- Respond professionally to parent questions and concerns and escalate matters to the Supervisor/Director when appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with educators and families to support children's individual developmental and programming needs.
- Promote inclusive practices that support the diverse needs of children and families.
Administration & Centre Operations
- Assist with enrolment records, attendance, wait-list management, staff documentation, and general administrative duties.
- Support communication with families, staff, community partners, schools, and external agencies.
- Assist with preparation of reports, documentation, audits, and other administrative requirements.
- Help coordinate special events, enrichment programs, school-age programming, camps, and centre initiatives.
- Support the Supervisor with operational planning and problem-solving.
- Assume additional supervisory responsibilities when the Supervisor is unavailable, as authorized by the centre.
Qualifications
- Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators preferred/required based on centre needs.
- Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field.
- Previous experience working in a licensed child care setting.
- Leadership, lead educator, assistant supervisor, or supervisory experience is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of the CCEYA, Ontario child care licensing requirements, and How Does Learning Happen?
- Strong organizational, administrative, and time-management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to provide respectful leadership, coaching, and direction to staff.
- Strong judgment and ability to respond calmly and professionally to operational issues.
- Comfortable using computers and administrative systems, including email, Microsoft Office/Google Workspace, and child care management systems.
- Experience working in a non-profit child care environment is an asset.
Required Documentation
Successful candidates must be able to provide all documentation required to work in a licensed child care setting, including:
- Vulnerable Sector Check in accordance with applicable requirements
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification
- Required health/immunization documentation
- Proof of applicable education and professional registration
- Any additional documentation required under provincial legislation or centre policy
