Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Preparedness, the Regional Emergency Measurers Officer (REMO) is responsible for providing guidance and support to inform emergency management activities taking place across Nunavut. The role is also responsible for developing and communicating emergency management standards and procedures to stakeholders that have statutory responsibilities under the Emergency Measures Act (EMA) and responding to emergencies as needed. This position will allow Nunavut Emergency Management (NEM) to provide culturally relevant preparedness education, based on accepted best practice, as opposed to conventional messaging streaming from the predominantly national programs.

The incumbent will assist in reviewing and developing various training courses for the emergency measures program, and organizing and participating in school presentations, trade shows, career fairs and other public functions. The REMO replies to inquiries from the public, GN, municipalities, federal/provincial/territorial (FPT) partners and stakeholders on the Personal Preparedness Program and related initiatives and will be part of the Incident Command System (ICS) and based on the level of certification maybe called upon to act in one of the various command positions.

Responsibilities

The Regional Emergency Measurers Officer’s main responsibilities are, but are not limited to:

- Identifying preparedness, prevention,



response and recovery programs and initiatives at the territorial, regional and local community level as well as promoting a consistent and transparent approach to emergency response which has been vetted and approved by key decision-makers.
- Facilitating the delivery and administration of public education and awareness programs by delivering identified public education and awareness programs and assisting with delivery of programs conducted by external facilitators.
- Promoting programs such as the national emergency preparedness week and other initiatives by participating in planning teleconferences and meetings with FPT stakeholders as well as proposing and supporting ongoing program campaigns.
- Acting as the NEM Emergency Operations Duty Officer and carrying out other duties as directed by manager as needed by monitoring the 24-hour emergency line and responding to calls and referring callers to the appropriate response agency.

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through the:
- Successful completion of Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS I-100);
- Two (2) years of related experience or as Emergency management coordinator;
- Basic emergency management training

Assets include:
- Community emergency management training;
- Team member with the fire department;
- Community search and rescue committee;
- Local community training on basic search and rescue protocols.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.



The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
