Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Facility Assets, the Asset Management Student supports innovative initiatives within the Sustainability and Asset Management Department. Working with relevant business units, the successful candidate will review and analyze data, practices, procedures, and policies against best practices, applicable standards, and legislation related to project management and asset management.

- Start Date: January 4, 2027
- Duration: Eight- and 12-month terms are available; preference will be given to students seeking a 12-month placement.
- Eligibility: Open to co-op and non-co-op post-secondary students who will be enrolled in a post-secondary program in 2027.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Life Cycle and Capital Planning

- Update and track current life-cycle and capital projects using EAM, Power BI, Microsoft Excel, and Cayenta.
- Support planning and forecasting for future capital construction and life-cycle plans and budgets.
- Assist with project initiation, including preparing scopes of work and preliminary budgets, retaining consultants, reviewing applicable codes, bylaws, and regulations, and coordinating projects.

Sustainability

- Assist the Sustainability team with net-zero project research, design, reporting, and construction documentation.
- Support grant proposals for future projects, including energy-load calculations for net-zero projects and utility billing tracking, invoicing, and reporting.
- Assist with planning and project management for public, staff, and fleet electric-vehicle charging infrastructure and related policy development.

Space Planning





- Update furniture inventory records and the related Microsoft Excel database.
- Manage furniture, key, and facility inventory.

Working Conditions

- Work in the office five days per week and attend sites within the City of Markham.
- Occasionally work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays, to support programs and projects.
- Assist with small office furniture moves and relocations.

Qualifications

- Currently enrolled in a relevant post-secondary program, or graduating from a program in December 2027.
- Interest in asset management, building construction, sustainability, or data management.
- Strong organizational, communication, multitasking, and leadership skills.
- Proactive self-starter who works effectively both independently and collaboratively.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and with video-conferencing platforms.
- Experience with Power BI, database management systems, or enterprise asset management software is an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- A valid Ontario G driver’s licence and the ability to visit City of Markham facilities are assets.

- Digital Skills: Build proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications and learn professional data-management tools, practices, and regulatory standards used by municipalities.
