In addition, the MLA is responsible for reporting results of clinical samples. The MLA may assist with the training of newly hired staff, students and residents in the reception, handling and processing of patient specimens. The MLA may also be required to identify and resolve unsuitable specimens for testing.The MLA participates in service and hospital-wide activities and programs that model and promote a protected and healthy client-centered environment and that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.Requirements:Education and Experience:Post-secondary training in an approved accredited medical laboratory technician program or Grade 12 Diploma and successful completion of relevant accredited courses along with OSMT certification (or equivalent). Knowledge,



experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic/experience requirements/credentials.Current certification in Basic CPR Level 1Minimum of six months to one year of experienceExperience in Venipuncture (including infants)Familiarity with current medical laboratory terminologyCurrent experience with various ECG proceduresSkills and Abilities:Ability to process specimens in conjunction with reference laboratories and transport as per Transportation of Dangerous Goods protocolKnowledge of relevant standards, procedures, and relevant regulations in medical laboratory theory, principles and practicesIncorporate working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation; transportation of dangerous goods, WHMIS, Universal precautions, safe handling practices and the safe disposal of specimens and materials once testing has been completedDemonstrated keyboarding skills and computer knowledgeAbility to work as a vigorous team member in a very busy environment, ensuring timely completion of tasksAbility to communicate with patients and the public in an effective and reassuring mannerAbility to assist with statistics, quality assurance and audit dataOther duties as assignedGood attendance and availability required
