OverviewAdastra is seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to manage, optimize, and support enterprise database environments across development, staging, and production systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for database performance, availability, security, backup and recovery processes, and operational support. This role requires strong troubleshooting abilities, a proactive approach to database management, and experience supporting mission-critical systems in fast-paced environments.Primary Location: Toronto, ONWork Model: Hybrid 2-Days OnsiteEmployment Type: Full-Time or ContractorVacancy Status: NewCompensation Range: $70,000 - $85,000 CADRESPONSIBILITIESInstall, configure, administer, and maintain database environments across development, staging, and productionMonitor database health and performance, proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks through optimization of queries, indexes, and configurationsDesign, implement, and regularly test backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategiesManage database security, including user access, permissions, encryption, and compliance with data protection standardsPlan and execute database upgrades, patching, and migrations while minimizing business disruptionImplement and maintain high availability and failover solutions, including clustering, replication, mirroring, and log shippingTroubleshoot and resolve database incidents, conducting root cause analysis and implementing preventative measuresPerform capacity planning and forecasting to support future storage, performance, and scalability requirementsPartner with development teams on schema design, data modeling, and query optimization best practicesAutomate routine database administration tasks, including backups, health monitoring, and maintenance activitiesMaintain database architecture documentation, configurations,



and operational proceduresProvide guidance and knowledge sharing on database administration best practicesParticipate in on-call support for critical production systems as requiredQUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCEProven experience as a Database Administrator supporting enterprise production environmentsStrong experience administering relational database platforms such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar technologiesExpertise in database performance tuning, query optimization, indexing strategies, and troubleshootingHands-on experience with backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery solutionsExperience managing database security, access controls, encryption, and compliance requirementsExperience planning and executing database upgrades, migrations, and patching activitiesStrong understanding of database architecture, schema design, and data modeling principlesExperience with scripting and automation for database administration functionsKnowledge of monitoring, capacity planning, and database health management practicesStrong analytical, problem-solving, and root cause analysis skillsExcellent communication and documentation skillsAbility to work effectively in cross-functional teams and support critical production environmentsNICE TO HAVEExperience with cloud database platforms in Azure, AWS, or Google CloudExperience with containerized or cloud-native database environmentsKnowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
