Supervises: Patrol Avalanche Forecasters, Assistant Avalanche Forecasters, Avalanche Mitigation Teams.

JOB POSTING*Note* the position being offered requires working a schedule as determined by the operational needs of the team. In the event of a scheduling conflict, shifts will be assigned by the Patrol Director, with shift selection occurring in order of seniority.

As the leader of the Avalanche Forecasting Team you will support all aspects of RED Mountain Resorts operational avalanche forecasting and mitigation program while also supporting Professional Patrol operations. Working alongside the Forecasting team you will collect weather and snowpack observations, conduct stability assessments, participate in operational forecasting and avalanche hazard mitigation. This position requires sound decision-making, excellent communication, and a commitment to mountain safety.

The Avalanche Forecasting Coordinator leads a team of (two - four) CAA Level 2’s (or apprenticing Level 2’s) with the goal of ensuring public and employee safety with regard to snow safety. They work cooperatively with the other Patrol Coordinators. This position is not back filled on the Coordinators days off. The Avalanche forecasting position will be scheduled for 10-hour days, 4 days per week during the operating season and 8-hour days, 5 days per week during the pre and post operating season.

Essential Duties:

Oversee and direct Patrol Forecasting Team daily duties, as they are assigned





Conduct snowpack analysis in study plots and other selected areas

Supervise field operations including slope testing

Supervise avalanche control operation: develop daily control strategies, assign control teams and control routes

Ensure Avalanche Safety Plan and Avalanche Control Procedures are current and relevant.

Facilitate avalanche related training programs including regular refresher training.

Ensure that all training certificates are up to date and valid

Supervise and train for handling, transporting, preparing and deployment of explosives for the purpose of avalanche control

Creation of a daily avalanche hazard forecast, Avalanche hazard analysis, info-ex report as well as other avalanche and weather related information

Collecting weather observations, reporting and documentation as required.

Maintain all signage, fencing and closures as required for the Snow Safety Program and RED’s signage requirements

Deliver pre-season and ongoing training in avalanche search and rescue

Deliver pre-season and ongoing training in avalanche control techniques and procedures and routes.

Provide mentorship and serve as a Professional reference for developing and emerging avalanche professionals





Perform and document mid and end of season reviews with members of the forecasting team

Document all training of staff in a log.

Perform the daily Magazine check, cleaning and record keeping

Keep current with any industry changes to explosives storage, transport and regulations

Take a leadership role in providing a high standard of pre hospital care and transport for injured guests and employees

Follow all Red Mountain Resort SOPs.

Be available to work early mornings and extended hours.

Support and encourage the adoption of new technologies and innovative practices within the company

Qualifications

Canadian Avalanche Association Level 2 for Operations

CAA Professional Member in Valuable Standing

NUEC3 with Advanced Protocols

WSBC blasting ticket, current in Hand Charging and Safety Fuse Assemblies

CAA Advanced Weather

CAA Intro to Avalanche Mapping

CAA Avalanche Search and Rescue Advanced Skills

Five years Professional Ski Patrol at Red Mountain

General computer skills knowledge and proficiency

Current TDG certificate
