The Native Studies Department is seeking qualified, Contract Academic Staff to teach the following three credit hour course during the Winter session of 2027. The instructor will be responsible for content delivery with expectations consistent with offerings of this course within the appropriate department. Qualified candidates must possess strong teaching, communication and organizational skills, and demonstrate evidence of teaching effectiveness. This course will be delivered in an online, synchronous format.

68.304 Colonial Institutions and Indigenous Peoples

January 7 – April 1, Thursday Evenings, 5:00 – 8:00 PM

This course explores how the Canadian Government attempted to assimilate Indigenous Peoples using its various institutions, notably Indian Residential Schools, Indian Hospitals, Sanatoriums, and the Child Welfare System. The goals of these institutions were to replace Indigenous cultures, spiritualities, worldviews, and languages with those of the colonizers.

This course will cover the following topics: The experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit at Residential Schools, Sanatoriums, Indian Hospitals, and within the Child Welfare System; how First Nations, Métis, and Inuit were affected; what it was like returning home and how communities were impacted; and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

Qualifications: Applicants should hold a minimum of a Master’s degree in an area related to the topic of instruction.

Salary: $8132.00 per 3 credit hour course
