Accounting Technician — Professional Accounting Firm

Location: Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada

Employment Type: Full-time

Schedule: Monday–Friday

About Us

We are an Alberta-based accounting firm specializing in providing accounting, tax, and advisory services to professional corporations and their owners, including physicians, dentists, lawyers, and other incorporated professionals.

We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Accounting Technician to join our team. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working closely with clients, has solid technical accounting skills, and is interested in developing expertise in professional corporations and owner-managed businesses.

Criteria

As an Accounting Technician, you will work with a portfolio of professional corporate clients and be responsible for maintaining accurate accounting records, compiling financial statements and preparing individual and corporate tax returns while supporting the firm's accounting and tax professionals.

You will have the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of the unique accounting requirements of professional corporations, including shareholder transactions, dividends, management of personal and corporate expenses, GST, payroll, and year-end compliance.

Key Responsibilities

- Maintain complete and accurate accounting records for professional corporations
- Perform bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients
- Prepare and post journal entries
- Complete bank, credit card, and general ledger reconciliations
- Record and reconcile shareholder and director transactions
- Track shareholder loans, dividends, draws, and personal expenses paid by corporations
- Prepare GST returns and related working papers
- Assist with corporate year-end working papers and financial statements




- Prepare schedules and support documentation for corporate tax returns
- Assist accountants with year-end files and respond to information requests
- Reconcile payroll and source deductions, where applicable
- Communicate with clients to obtain missing information and resolve accounting questions
- Maintain organized and accurate electronic client files
- Identify discrepancies and unusual transactions and bring them to the attention of the appropriate accountant
- Assist with accounting and tax projects as required
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client financial and personal information

Qualifications

- Accounting diploma, certificate, or equivalent education and experience
- 2+ years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, preferably in a public practice environment
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial statements
- Experience with Canadian corporate accounting

- Strong Excel skills
- Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks Online, Sage, or similar
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to manage multiple client files and deadlines
- Professional written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with accountants and other team members

Preferred Experience Experience with any of the following would be considered an asset:

- Professional corporations
- Owner-managed corporations




- Corporate year-end bookkeeping

- GST and payroll remittances
- Shareholder loan and dividend transactions
- Corporate and personal tax return preparation
- Working in an Alberta public practice accounting firm
