Position Summary:

The Apprentice Powerline Technician is responsible for assisting in the construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems while progressing through the Alberta apprenticeship program. Working under the guidance and supervision of Journeyperson Powerline Technicians, the apprentice develops the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to safely perform work on utility and electrical infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

· Follow all company, client, and regulatory Occupational Health & Safety requirements, safe work practices, and reporting procedures for hazards, incidents, and near misses.

· Participate in tailboard meetings, job hazard assessments, and safety meetings.

· Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems.

· Assist with the installation and termination of underground distribution systems and associated equipment.

· Support the installation, maintenance, and repair of poles, anchors, transformers, conductors, insulators, switches, streetlights, lightning arrestors, and related utility infrastructure.

· Learn and perform trade-related tasks under the direct supervision of a Journeyperson Powerline Technician.

· Assist with troubleshooting and repairing electrical distribution system components.

· Conduct inspections of power lines, poles, equipment,



and cable systems and report deficiencies to supervisors.

· Assist with system maintenance, outage response, and restoration activities as directed.

· Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and approved utility equipment in accordance with training and competency level.

· Assist in the operation of utility vehicles, aerial devices, digger derricks, backhoes, skid steers, and other equipment when authorized and qualified.

· Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.

· Maintain compliance with utility work procedures, Alberta safety legislation, PPE requirements, and company standards.

· Complete apprenticeship training requirements, technical training, and competency evaluations as required.

· Perform general labour and material handling duties associated with utility construction and maintenance projects.

· Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required

· Registered in the Trade of Powerline Technician in Alberta, or eligible to register

· Valuable physical coordination and manual dexterity. Possess strength and stamina and the use of proper lifting techniques, with the ability to lift more than 25 kilograms

· Sufficient understanding of mechanical (equipment) concepts and principles

· Good hearing and colour vision

· Possess valid driver’s license with acceptable drivers abstract

· Comfortable working at heights in varying extreme environmental conditions

· Able to work in confined spaces





· Safety certifications: Common Safety Orientation CSTS 2020 with WHMIS, First Aid, Ground Disturbance Level 1I, H2S, Fall Protection

Preferred

· Red Seal Endorsed Journeyman certification

· 3-5 years experience of overhead powerline construction

· Experienced in performing live-line (hot line) work on energized electrical distribution systems, utilizing approved techniques and specialized equipment

· Possess valid class 3 driver’s license with acceptable drivers abstract

· 2-3 years experience in leading utility crews

Work Environment:

· Working outdoors in varying environmental conditions

· Travelling to various work sites, including remote areas

· Frequent strenuous work including heavy lifting, carrying and reaching

· Climbing poles or towers

· Working from a bucket attached to an aerial lift boom

· Entering manholes and underground vaults

· Standby duties

· After hours response calls

· Other hazards associated with the trade and individual job settings
