There are easier ways to practise optometry

Large corporate organizations can offer guaranteed daily rates, substantial signing incentives, and the ready-made infrastructure of a national network. For some optometrists, that is exactly the right environment.

We offer something fundamentally different.

Ocean Optometry and Miller Optometry represent a genuinely independent group of practices across Nova Scotia—spanning the vibrant urban core of Halifax and Dartmouth, the beautiful South Shore in Bridgewater, and our newest location in Truro.

We value real-world experience and business curiosity over years on a diploma. We're looking for an OD who understands the commercial reality of independent practice and wants to actively shape both patient care and long-term clinic growth.

This isn't the prospect for everyone

Independent practice has natural ebbs and flows. Some weeks are exceptionally busy. Others create room to develop deeper relationships, elevate the patient experience, introduce patients to specialized solutions they didn't know existed, connect with our local communities, and strategize where our practice should go next.

We don't believe an Associate's contribution begins when a patient enters the exam room and ends when the prescription is signed. We do not measure success simply by counting how many examinations appear on tomorrow's schedule.

We are looking for an OD who sees the bigger picture.

What does that mean in practice?

- Taking time to understand the person sitting in front of you—asking about their work, family, hobbies, driving habits, and digital demands.
- Making thoughtful, complete clinical recommendations rather than simply handing over a prescription.
- Recognizing opportunities to develop specialized areas of care (e.g., dry eye management, specialty contact lenses, myopia control) that genuinely benefit our patient base.




- Building deep relationships that turn first-time patients into lifelong patients, families into multi-generational patients, and great experiences into organic referrals.
- Understanding that when an independent practice grows, everyone contributing to that growth should prosper.

You will have a voice here Our intent and desire is not for the Associate to be expected to disappear into an exam room while somebody in a distant head office determines what the patient experience looks like.

You will not be running the practice alone. Our locations across Halifax, Dartmouth, Bridgewater, and Truro are fully staffed with dedicated pre-testers, experienced opticians, and skilled administrative team members. This support infrastructure ensures your time is focused on direct patient care, clinical decision-making, and high-level practice development.

Compensation & Commercial Reality

As an independent practice, we won't pretend we compete with corporate forgivable loans or artificial sign-on traps. Instead, we build compensation relationships where mutual success is aligned.

- Flexible Structure: We are open to discussing the remuneration model that best fits your situation—whether that is a traditional percentage of gross billings, a structured salary/employed setup with earning gurantees, or a hybrid model.




- Balanced Schedule: Full-time hours (4–5 days per week). Weekend duties (Saturdays) are shared equitably across our team of doctors.
- Value-Driven Rewards: Your earning potential is not tied to squeezing as many patients into a day as humanly possible, but on the real value you create: clinical excellence, patient retention, optical recommendations, and practice growth.

What We Are Building

We are not recruiting simply to fill an empty chair. We are looking for an OD who can become a key figure in the next chapter of Ocean Optometry and Miller Optometry.

While this role begins as an Associateship, we are explicitly looking to have broader long-term conversations regarding practice growth, expanded leadership, and with whom we can define options for partnership or equity buy-in opportunities.
