Experienced Class 1 Backhoe Operator Wanted

Utilidril is looking for an experienced Class 1 Backhoe Operator to join our team in Nisku, Alberta.

This is a skilled field position for an experienced equipment operator who is comfortable excavating around existing underground utilities and working on active utility and civil construction sites.

The successful candidate will primarily operate backhoes and other construction equipment while also using their Class 1 licence to transport equipment, materials and trailers as required.

Our crews work on telecommunications, utility, pipeline and civil construction projects throughout Alberta and British Columbia.

Out-of-town work is a regular requirement of this position.

What You'll Do

- Safely operate backhoes on utility and civil construction projects
- Excavate trenches, bell holes, utility crossings and other excavations
- Work safely around existing underground utilities
- Perform precision excavation and expose utilities where required
- Assist with trenching, backfilling, grading and site restoration
- Load and unload trucks and trailers
- Move soil, aggregate and construction materials
- Assist with utility installation and underground construction activities
- Read and follow utility locates, drawings and site instructions
- Maintain proper excavation slopes, setbacks and spoil placement
- Work with hydrovac, HDD and underground utility crews
- Perform equipment inspections and identify maintenance concerns
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Maintain clean and properly cared-for equipment
- Operate other construction equipment as required
- Drive Class 1 vehicles and transport equipment or materials as required
- Tow equipment and trailers safely
- Secure equipment and loads in accordance with transportation requirements
- Complete field paperwork, FLHAs and required safety documentation
- Set up and maintain safe work areas
- Assist with traffic control and site setup when required
- Perform general labour and assist the crew when equipment operation is not required




- Work with supervisors and other crew members to complete projects safely and efficiently

What We're Looking ForRequired
- Previous experience operating a backhoe in utility, pipeline or civil construction
- Valid Class 1 driver's licence
- Clean and acceptable driver's abstract
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check
- Experience excavating around existing underground utilities
- Strong understanding of safe excavation and ground disturbance practices
- Ability to perform precision excavation in congested utility areas
- Ability to safely load, transport and secure construction equipment
- Experience towing equipment trailers
- Ability to complete daily equipment and vehicle inspections
- Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors
- Willingness to travel and work out of town
- Willingness to work overtime and occasional weekends
- Dependable, safety-conscious and reliable work habits
- Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a crew

Safety Certifications Required
- Energy Safety Canada H2S Alive
- Intermediate First Aid / CPR
- Energy Safety Canada Fall Protection

The Right Fit We're looking for an experienced operator who understands that working around underground utilities requires patience, attention and good judgment.

The right candidate can operate a backhoe confidently but also knows when to slow down. You should be comfortable working from utility locates, communicating with ground personnel and safely excavating in areas where existing infrastructure may be congested.

We're also looking for someone who takes care of equipment. Daily inspections, cleanliness, reporting mechanical concerns and operating equipment properly are part of the job.

Having a Class 1 licence is an important part of this position. You should be comfortable transporting equipment, towing trailers and helping move materials and machinery between job sites when required.

This is a hands-on construction position. When you're not operating equipment, you should be prepared to assist the rest of the crew with whatever is reasonably required to complete the job safely and efficiently.
