This is not a typical Controller position.
We are a growing, privately owned group of companies with operations in agriculture and cattle, metal recycling, trucking/logistics, and commercial real estate.
There is a lot happening.
Different companies. Different revenue streams. Equipment purchases. Cattle purchases and sales. Feed bills. Payroll. HST. Intercompany transactions. Rental properties. Capital projects. Financing. Accounts payable and receivable. Banking. Contractors. Suppliers. Government filings. Month-end reporting.
We are looking for one exceptional person who can bring all of that together.
This position would suit an experienced accountant or CPA who enjoys being close to the business, understands how privately owned companies actually operate, and wants significantly more involvement than simply preparing financial statements from an office once a month.
You will work directly with the owner and become the person responsible for keeping the financial side of the businesses organized, accurate, current and helpful.
And when we say hands-on, we mean it.
If an invoice needs to be sent, you send it.
If an account does not reconcile, you figure out why.
If someone needs to be paid, you make sure it happens.
If an HST number doesn't make sense, you investigate it.
If we want to know what a group of cattle actually made, you help us determine it.
At the same time, you need to be capable of stepping back and looking at the entire organization financially.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
You will gradually take ownership of the day-to-day financial administration and internal accounting across several related companies.
Responsibilities will include
- Managing accounting across multiple corporations and business divisions
- Maintaining accurate books in QuickBooks Online
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Preparing and sending customer invoices
- Reviewing, coding and entering supplier invoices
- Bank and credit-card reconciliations
- Payroll administration and payroll-related reporting
- HST preparation, tracking and filings
- Intercompany transactions and reconciliations
- Tracking loans, equipment financing and other debt
- Maintaining organized financial records for each company
- Monitoring cash flow across the businesses
- Preparing weekly and monthly financial reporting for ownership
- Month-end closing and account review
- Budgeting and forecasting
- Preparing information for lenders and financial institutions
- Tracking capital expenditures and major projects
- Helping monitor profitability by company, division or activity
- Developing better reporting for our cattle and agricultural operations
- Working directly with our external accountants on year-end files, corporate taxes and tax planning
- Coordinating with banks, insurance companies, suppliers, government agencies and professional advisors when required
- Identifying errors, inefficiencies and things that simply don't make sense—and fixing them
We Want More Than Someone Who Keeps the Books One of the biggest objectives of this position is to improve the quality of the financial information we have available to make decisions.
We want to know things such as:
- Where is the cash going?
- What is coming due?
- What does each company actually make?
- What are our receivables?
- What are our payables?
- What is our current debt position?
- What is our upcoming HST or payroll obligation?
- How profitable was a group of cattle?
- What are our true operating costs?
- Where are we spending more than expected?
- What should we be paying attention to next month?
We want somebody who enjoys answering those questions. Technology & Automation
We are also actively looking for ways to make our businesses more efficient.
We use QuickBooks Online and are increasingly incorporating AI, automation and connected systems into our operations.
You do not need to be a programmer.
But we would love to find someone who is curious about technology and interested in using tools such as AI, Zapier and other automation platforms to eliminate repetitive work and improve reporting.
If your first reaction to a repetitive accounting task is, “There must be a better way to do this,” you will probably fit in very well here.
Who We Are Looking For The ideal person is knowledgeable enough to operate at a Controller level but practical enough to still do the everyday work when it needs to be done.
You may currently be
- A Controller in a smaller private company
- An Assistant Controller ready for more responsibility
- A CPA working with owner-managed businesses
- A Senior Accountant who wants to move out of public accounting
- A senior accounting professional who has effectively been running the finances of a private business already
A CPA designation is strongly preferred, although we will consider an exceptional candidate with substantial hands-on accounting experience. Experience with privately owned businesses is extremely valuable to us.
Agriculture, construction, transportation, real estate, manufacturing, recycling or other asset-heavy businesses would all be relevant backgrounds.
What Matters Most
We are looking for someone who:
- Takes ownership
- Is highly organized
- Is extremely accurate
- Can work independently
- Understands accounting beyond simple data entry
- Is comfortable working directly with an owner
- Is willing to ask questions when something doesn't make sense
- Can manage several companies and priorities at once
- Doesn't believe routine work is “beneath” them
- Can move easily between detailed accounting work and higher-level financial analysis
- Communicates clearly and follows through
- Likes improving systems instead of simply maintaining them
We don't need someone who wants to manage a large accounting department. We need someone who wants to own the financial function.
As the businesses continue to grow, this person will also have the opportunity to help determine what the future accounting department should look like and what additional support should eventually be added.
Why This Role Is Different
This isn't a large corporation where your responsibility is one small piece of the accounting department.
You will see the entire business.
You will have direct access to ownership and be involved in real business decisions involving agriculture, livestock, equipment, property, financing and operating companies.
Your work will have an immediate impact.
There is very little bureaucracy and a great deal of variety.
For the right person, this is an opportunity to become a key part of a growing group of privately owned businesses and build the internal financial systems with us rather than simply inheriting someone else's system.
Pay: $75,000.00-$125,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
