Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Mechanical Shop Foreman, the Journeyperson Machinist is responsible for precision machining, line boring, component repair, and mechanical support for DF Barnes' marine operations. This is a hands-on position combining conventional machine-shop work with field and vessel-based mechanical repairs. The successful candidate must have demonstrated marine repair experience and be capable of working aboard vessels alongside the mechanical team during maintenance, repair, overhaul, and refit activities.

The position will primarily involve the setup and operation of conventional lathes and milling machines, along with portable line boring equipment for field and vessel repairs. The Journeyperson Machinist will manufacture, repair, modify, and refurbish components and provide mechanical support aboard vessels as required.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

- Set up and operate conventional lathes and milling machines to manufacture, repair, and refurbish precision components.
- Perform turning, facing, boring, drilling, milling, threading, tapping, and related conventional machining operations.
- Set up and operate portable line boring equipment for field and vessel-based repairs.
- Perform line boring of worn or damaged bores, bearing locations, pin connections, machinery foundations, and other mechanical components.
- Establish line boring setups, alignment, measurements, and machining requirements to achieve specified dimensions and tolerances.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, specifications, charts, and tables.
- Determine machining methods, setups, tooling, tolerances, and sequence of operations.
- Calculate dimensions, tolerances, fits, clearances, speeds, feeds, and machining allowances.
- Measure and lay out workpieces prior to machining.
- Manufacture and repair shafts, sleeves, bushings, pins, flanges, bearing fits, and other marine and industrial components.
- Repair worn or damaged components through machining and dimensional restoration.
- Fit and assemble machined components using appropriate hand and power tools.
- Verify dimensions using micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and other precision measuring instruments.
- Confirm completed work meets drawings, specifications, dimensional tolerances, and quality requirements.
- Identify machining, dimensional, material, or drawing discrepancies and communicate concerns to the Mechanical Shop Foreman.
- Maintain lathes, milling machines, line boring equipment, tooling, and precision measuring equipment in good working condition.
- Provide guidance and instruction to apprentices and less-experienced employees.

Job Requirements

Marine & Mechanical Repair Support

The Journeyperson Machinist will be expected to work as an active member of the mechanical team and is not limited to machine-shop duties.

- Work aboard vessels during maintenance, repair, overhaul, and refit projects.
- Support mechanical repairs in engine rooms, machinery spaces, deck areas, and other vessel locations.
- Assist with the removal, disassembly, inspection, repair, reassembly, alignment, and installation of mechanical equipment.
- Support repairs involving shafts, bearings, bushings, pins, couplings, pumps, valves, winches, deck machinery, and other vessel equipment.
- Perform field measurements and dimensional inspections to determine machining and repair requirements.
- Perform line boring and other portable machining activities aboard vessels and at client facilities.
- Assist with troubleshooting worn or damaged mechanical components and developing practical repair solutions.
- Support removal of components from vessels for shop machining and subsequent reinstallation.
- Perform general mechanical fitting and assembly using hand, power, hydraulic, and precision tools.
- Work effectively alongside millwrights, mechanics, welders, pipefitters, and other marine trades.
- Travel to vessels, shipyards, client facilities, and other project locations as required.

Quality & Documentation

- Complete time records, material usage, inspection records, and other required documentation accurately and on time.
- Maintain appropriate traceability for materials and completed work.
- Verify critical dimensions before, during, and after machining.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, procedures, and client requirements.
- Report non-conformances, equipment deficiencies, damaged components, and dimensional discrepancies to supervision.
- Work in accordance with the company quality management system and applicable project requirements.

Safety Responsibilities

- Comply with all company and client health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
- Participate in toolbox meetings,



hazard assessments, job safety analyses, and other required safety activities.
- Properly inspect and safely operate machine-shop and portable machining equipment.
- Use required personal protective equipment.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions and equipment deficiencies.
- Stop work and notify supervision when conditions are unsafe or when work cannot be completed in accordance with approved requirements.
- Maintain good housekeeping in both shop and vessel work areas.

Qualifications & Requirements

- Red Seal Journeyperson Machinist certification.
- Completion of a recognized Machinist apprenticeship program.
- Minimum five years of relevant machining experience.
- Marine, vessel repair, or shipyard experience is required.
- Demonstrated experience setting up and operating conventional/manual lathes and milling machines is required.
- Demonstrated line boring experience is required.
- Ability to set up and operate portable line boring equipment in field and vessel environments.
- Ability to independently determine machining setups, tooling requirements, measurements, and machining sequences.
- Experience with precision measurement and inspection equipment.
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical information.
- Strong understanding of machining tolerances, fits, clearances, material properties, tooling, speeds, and feeds.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
- Ability and willingness to perform mechanical repair work aboard vessels in addition to machining duties.
- Ability to safely use hand, power, hydraulic, and precision tools.
- Ability to work effectively with other marine trades.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Valuable verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Ability to work shift work, overtime, weekends, and extended hours when required.
- Ability and willingness to travel to vessels, shipyards, and project locations.

Additional Assets

- Experience machining and repairing marine shafts, sleeves, bushings, pins, flanges, bearing fits, and similar components.
- Experience with shafting, bearings, couplings, pumps, rotating equipment, and marine deck machinery.
- Experience performing dimensional restoration of worn equipment.
- Experience with portable or in-situ machining equipment in addition to line boring.
- Offshore Basic Survival Training (BST).
- Offshore oil and gas experience.
- Experience working within an ISO 9001 quality management system.

Working Conditions

This position involves a combination of machine-shop, shipyard, field, and vessel-based work. The Journeyperson Machinist must be comfortable moving between conventional machining in the shop and hands-on mechanical and line boring work aboard vessels. Work may be performed in engine rooms, machinery spaces, workshops, decks, confined spaces, and other industrial or marine environments. The position requires the physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, access restricted areas, stand for extended periods, handle tools and equipment, and perform the normal physical duties associated with marine mechanical repair.

Shift work, overtime, weekends, travel, and work outside normal business hours may be required to support vessel schedules and project requirements.

Core Expectations

The Journeyperson Machinist is expected to be a versatile, hands-on marine machinist with strong conventional lathe and milling experience and proven line boring capability. The individual must be equally comfortable machining precision components in the shop and working aboard vessels as part of the mechanical repair team. Safety, quality workmanship, accurate measurement, mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting ability, and teamwork are fundamental requirements of the position.
