Journeyperson Picker / Boom Truck Operator – Class 1

Experienced Journeyperson Picker Operator Wanted

Utilidril is looking for an experienced Journeyperson Picker / Boom Truck Operator with a Class 1 licence to join our team in Nisku, Alberta.

This is a skilled field position for an experienced operator who can safely operate picker and boom truck equipment, perform lifts around active construction sites and underground infrastructure, and transport equipment and materials between job sites.

Our crews work on utility, pipeline, telecommunications, industrial and civil construction projects throughout Alberta and British Columbia.

The successful candidate must be comfortable working independently, coordinating lifts with field crews and customers, and taking responsibility for the safe operation and care of the truck and lifting equipment.

Out-of-town work is a regular requirement of this position.

What You'll Do

- Safely operate picker / boom truck equipment
- Perform lifts on utility, pipeline, industrial and civil construction sites
- Lift, place and move equipment, materials, structures and construction components
- Set up the picker safely, including proper outrigger placement and stabilization
- Assess site conditions and maintain safe operating distances from excavations, overhead hazards and underground utilities
- Select and use appropriate rigging for lifts
- Inspect slings, chains, hooks, shackles and other rigging equipment
- Work with riggers, swampers and ground personnel during lifting operations
- Determine load weights, lift radius and equipment capacity before completing lifts
- Follow load charts and manufacturer operating requirements
- Transport equipment and materials using Class 1 vehicles and trailers
- Load, secure and unload equipment and materials
- Perform proper load securement in accordance with transportation requirements
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
- Complete daily picker, crane and rigging inspections
- Maintain required logbooks, inspection records, field tickets and safety documentation
- Identify and report equipment defects or maintenance concerns
- Maintain the truck, picker, rigging and associated equipment in clean and serviceable condition
- Follow customer and company lifting procedures and safety requirements
- Complete FLHAs and other field-level hazard assessments




- Coordinate safely with hydrovac, HDD, excavation and underground utility crews
- Assist with site setup, traffic control and general field activities when required
- Communicate professionally with customers, supervisors and other contractors
- Assist the crew with other tasks required to complete projects safely and efficiently

What We're Looking ForRequired
- Journeyperson Boom Truck Operator ticket/certificate, or recognized equivalent
- Valid Class 1 driver's licence
- Clean and acceptable driver's abstract
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check
- Previous experience operating picker / boom truck equipment in construction, utility, pipeline or industrial environments
- Strong understanding of safe lifting and rigging practices
- Ability to read and properly apply crane load charts
- Experience selecting and inspecting rigging equipment
- Experience loading, transporting and securing equipment and materials
- Ability to safely operate around active construction sites
- Ability to complete vehicle, equipment and rigging inspections
- Strong understanding of equipment limitations and safe operating procedures
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work
- Willingness to travel and work out of town
- Willingness to work overtime and occasional weekends
- Dependable, safety-conscious and reliable work habits
- Ability to work independently while also working effectively with field crews

The Right Fit We're looking for an experienced picker operator who takes responsibility for their equipment, their lifts and the people working around them.

The right candidate understands that safe picker operation starts before anything comes off the ground. You should be comfortable assessing the work area, determining load weight and radius, selecting the correct rigging, setting the truck up properly and stopping a lift when conditions aren't right.

You should also take pride in looking after your truck and equipment. Daily inspections, proper rigging storage, cleanliness, preventative maintenance and reporting mechanical concerns are part of the position.

The Class 1 component is important. You should be comfortable transporting equipment and materials, towing trailers, securing loads and moving between construction sites as required.

This is also a hands-on construction role. When you're not actively operating the picker, you should be prepared to assist the crew with other reasonable tasks required to complete the job safely and efficiently.
