Rooted in the teachings of the Wet'suwet'en territory, the Society has served as a vital hub for cultural, educational, health, and family services for more than 50 years.The Friendship Centre Cub House, operated by Dze L K'ant Friendship Centre Society, is part of this commitment, offering culturally protected, inclusive, and Indigenous-led early learning opportunities that support children, families, and community wellness.The Friendship Centre Cub House is funded through the Aboriginal Head Start Association of British Columbia (AHSABC), supporting high-quality early childhood programs rooted in Indigenous culture, language, family involvement, health promotion, nutrition, and social support.Position SummaryDze L K'ant Friendship Centre Society is seeking a dedicated and organized Cook to join the Friendship Centre Cub House team.The Cook plays an important role in supporting the health and well-being of children by planning and preparing nutritious meals and snacks in a safe, welcoming, and culturally responsive environment. The Cook is responsible for menu planning, food preparation, inventory management, food purchasing, and maintaining all food safety and sanitation standards. The Cook also supports cultural programming and special events through food preparation and meal service when required.Reports ToExecutive DirectorKey ResponsibilitiesMeal Planning and PreparationPlan and prepare nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and snacks for children in accordance with Canada Food Guide recommendations and childcare nutrition standards.Accommodate allergies, dietary restrictions, and cultural food preferences.Incorporate Indigenous foods and culturally relevant meal experiences where appropriate.Ensure meals are prepared and served in a safe, timely,
and professional manner.Food Purchasing and Inventory ManagementPlan menus and prepare shopping lists.Order and purchase food, kitchen supplies, and related inventory within approved budgets.Monitor inventory levels and ensure adequate food supplies are maintained.Rotate stock and monitor expiry dates to minimize waste.Maintain records of purchases, inventory, and food costs.Health, Safety, and SanitationMaintain compliance with Food Safe standards, public health requirements, licensing regulations, and organizational policies.Ensure kitchen equipment, food preparation areas, and storage areas remain clean and sanitary.Follow safe food handling, storage, and preparation procedures.Maintain required temperature logs and cleaning schedules.Family and Community SupportSupport cultural events, celebrations, family gatherings, and special activities through food preparation when required.Work collaboratively with educators, families, Elders, and community members to promote healthy eating and cultural learning.QualificationsRequiredFood Safe Level 1 Certification.Experience preparing meals in a childcare, school, community, healthcare, or similar setting.Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.Medical Clearance.PreferredFood Safe Level 2 Certification.Experience preparing meals for children.Knowledge of Indigenous foods, nutrition, and culturally relevant meal preparation.Experience working in Indigenous communities or community-based programs.Skills and AttributesStrong organizational and time-management skills.Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.Commitment to food safety and sanitation standards.Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Reliable, flexible, and dependable.Respect for Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community values.Hours and CompensationPart-time position: 30 hours per week.Wage: $25.00 per hourExtended health and dental benefits following successful completion of probation.Paid vacation time.Professional development and training opportunities.AHSABC learning and networking opportunities.Supportive, community-focused work environment.We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous candidates and individuals with experience working in Indigenous communities.
