Swahili Vision International Association (SVIA) is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Legal Support Worker for the Justice Pathways project. This is a part time contract position operating at 12 hours per week, running from October 2026 to March 2027.
As a Black-led organization dedicated to assisting the Black community in British Columbia, we prioritize culturally responsive programming. . Fluency in Swahili and/or French is strongly preferred to support our diverse participants.
This role does not require a licensed lawyer. We welcome applications from law students, paralegals, or individuals who have a strong background and formal study in the Canadian legal system. The Legal Support Worker will play a vital role in supporting justice-involved individuals or those at risk of involvement by translating complex legal concepts into accessible, community-focused resources and programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in creating and developing culturally relevant educational materials related to the Canadian justice system for community distribution.
- Engage in community outreach and relationship-building to support project visibility and participant recruitment.
- Assist in organizing, running,
and teaching educational workshops and court navigation sessions.
- Support and guide volunteer mentors participating in the program.
- Collect, track, and manage program data to support monitoring and evaluation efforts.
- Perform other related duties and administrative tasks as required for the successful execution of the project.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Current enrollment in a law program, formal training as a paralegal, or documented education/background studying the Canadian legal system.
- Strong understanding of the Canadian justice system and the systemic barriers faced by marginalized communities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify and explain legal processes clearly.
- Preferred fluency in Swahili and/or French.
- Experience in workshop facilitation, teaching, or community outreach is considered an asset.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for data collection and administrative tasks
Pay: $1,792.00 per month
