Library Clerk (Part-Time) – Reserve Mines Library
Cape Breton Regional Library invites internal and external applications for the position of Library Clerk (Part time) at the Reserve Mines Library.
Hourly Rate: $18.86/Hr
Hours of work: (22.5 hours per week)
The schedule includes days, evenings, and Saturdays. Please note that while there is a set schedule, shifts may change depending on branch needs.
Wednesday: 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (7 hours)
Thursday: 2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (5.5 hours)
Friday: 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (7 hours)
Saturday: 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (3 hours)
About the Library
Cape Breton Regional Library’s 11 branches serve communities across the region by offering programs, access to technology, and a wide range of lending services, including books, DVDs, equipment, and digital resources. Our libraries are welcoming community spaces for residents and visitors of all ages and backgrounds, and we recognize and respect the unique needs of the communities we serve.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and community-minded individual to join the Reserve Mines Library, a small branch where the successful candidate will work independently and play an important role in creating a welcoming and engaging library experience.
This position is well suited to someone who is passionate about literacy, lifelong learning, and connecting people with library services. The Reserve Mines Library is located within walking distance of an elementary school and close to local daycares, creating opportunities to build relationships with educators, children, families, and community groups.
The successful candidate will be comfortable reaching out to schools, daycares, and community organizations to promote library services, encourage visits to the branch, and identify opportunities for small-scale programs and partnerships.
This may include welcoming school or daycare visits and offering simple, engaging activities such as storytimes, book clubs, creative activities, or other programs suited to the size and space of the branch.
We are looking for someone who enjoys working with people, takes initiative, and can help make the Reserve Mines Library a welcoming and active community space.
Job Duties
- Provide friendly and welcoming customer service and circulation support, including checking out materials and registering patrons for library cards
- Assist patrons in locating library materials, using digital library resources, accessing services, and answering questions
- Build relationships with local schools, daycares, community groups, and organizations to promote library services and encourage use of the branch
- Answer incoming phone calls and notify patrons when items are ready for pickup
- Plan and deliver small-scale programs and activities for children, youth, and adults
- Prepare materials and spaces for programs and group visits
- Shelve, organize, and maintain library materials
- Schedule public computer bookings and provide basic assistance with printing, scanning, and other technology
- Open and close the library branch
- Accept payments for printing
- Carry out other duties related to the operation of the branch as required
Work Environment This position involves working independently in a small library branch and interacting with members of the public throughout the day.
Working conditions include lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling,
and carrying books and other library materials.
Qualifications The successful candidate will have:
- A high school diploma or equivalent; additional education or relevant experience is considered an asset
- Experience working in a customer service environment, with an inclusive and empathetic approach to serving the public
- Confidence engaging with children, families, educators, community groups, and members of the public
- An interest in literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement
- The ability to work independently while also working collaboratively as part of the CBRL team
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- The ability to organize and prioritize tasks
- Confidence using technology, including Windows-based applications; additional technology skills are considered an asset
- A willingness to develop new skills and participate in professional development opportunities
- Experience delivering programs, workshops, or activities for different age groups is considered an asset
