MANUAL MACHINIST (HORIZONTAL BORING MILL)

Position Summary The Manual Machinist is responsible for the setup and operation of manual machine tools used in the repair, rebuilding, and manufacture of industrial pump and rotating equipment components. The successful candidate will produce high-quality work while maintaining close tolerances, safety standards, and quality requirements.

A strong emphasis is placed on Horizontal Boring Mill (HBM) capability. Candidates with previous HBM experience are preferred; however, experienced machinists who possess strong manual machining skills and the aptitude to be trained on Horizontal Boring Mills are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Manual Machining Operations

- Set up and operate manual machining equipment including:
- Horizontal Boring Mills
- Vertical Boring Mills
- Engine Lathes
- Milling Machines
- Drill Presses
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and work instructions.
- Determine machining sequences, tooling requirements, and setup methods.
- Machine new components and repair existing equipment to specified tolerances.
- Perform turning, boring, threading, drilling, reaming, milling, and line boring operations.
- Machine large and complex pump and rotating equipment components.

Quality and Inspection

- Verify dimensions using precision measuring instruments.
- Conduct in-process and final inspections.
- Complete inspection documentation and work records.
- Maintain compliance with company quality standards.
- Identify and report non-conformances.

Equipment Maintenance and Housekeeping

- Perform routine maintenance of machinery and tooling.
- Maintain work areas in a clean and organized condition.
- Report machine deficiencies and repair requirements.




- Assist with tooling and fixture maintenance.

Safety Compliance

- Follow company safety policies and procedures.
- Use required PPE and safe work practices.
- Participate in safety meetings and training.
- Safely operate cranes, lifting devices, and forklifts when authorized.

Other Duties as Assigned

- Support shop improvement initiatives.
- Assist other departments as required.
- Participate in training and cross-functional projects.

Required Qualifications

Education

- Journeyman Machinist Certificate preferred.
- Apprentice Machinists with relevant experience will be considered.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience

- Minimum 5 years of manual machining experience preferred.
- Experience operating large manual machine tools.
- Experience in industrial repair, manufacturing, or custom machining environments.
- Experience with pump and rotating equipment components is an asset.

Licences / Certifications

- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence preferred.
- Forklift certification considered an asset.
- Overhead Crane certification considered an asset.

Preferred Qualifications

- Horizontal Boring Mill experience.
- Experience machining large industrial components.
- Red Seal Machinist designation.
- Pump repair industry experience.
- Experience with line boring operations.

Technical Skills

- Robust manual machining knowledge.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Proficiency with:
- Micrometers
- Calipers




- Dial Indicators
- Bore Gauges
- Depth Gauges
- Knowledge of machining practices, feeds, and speeds.
- Strong mathematical and layout skills.
- Mechanical troubleshooting ability.
- Ability and willingness to learn Horizontal Boring Mill operations.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.

Working Conditions

- Industrial machine shop environment.
- Exposure to moving equipment, noise, and metalworking fluids.
- Regular use of overhead cranes and lifting devices.
- Occasional overtime and weekend work as required.

Pay: $22.00-$44.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
