Our client is seeking a contract based QA Automation Engineer to design, develop, and maintain automated testing solutions for Windows/Win32 desktop applications. This is a hands-on role requiring strong experience with C#/.NET and Windows UI automation, ideally using FlaUI.

The successful candidate will work with complex desktop applications where UI controls and locators may not always be consistent. Robust troubleshooting skills and experience developing reliable, resilient automation strategies for dynamic Windows UI elements are important for this role.

Duration: 6 months to start

Location: Remote (client office is in Toronto)

Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and maintain automated tests for Windows/Win32 desktop applications.
- Build and enhance UI automation using FlaUI and C#/.NET.
- Develop reliable automation for complex desktop interfaces where control identifiers, button locators, or UI elements may change dynamically.
- Create resilient element identification strategies using AutomationId, Name, ControlType, hierarchy, and other UI Automation properties.
- Troubleshoot and resolve flaky or inconsistent automated tests.
- Analyze test failures and determine whether issues originate from the automation framework, application UI, test data, or application functionality.
- Build reusable automation components and improve the overall test automation framework.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and support automated regression testing.
- Collaborate with developers, QA engineers, and product teams to identify test scenarios and improve automation coverage.




- Document test results, defects, and automation solutions.

Requirements

- 5+ years of QA/testing experience, with significant hands-on test automation experience.
- Strong experience testing and automating Windows desktop / Win32 applications.
- Hands-on experience with FlaUI or similar Windows UI automation frameworks.
- Strong development experience with C# and .NET.
- Good understanding of Microsoft Windows UI Automation (UIA) concepts and technologies.
- Experience identifying and interacting with Windows UI controls using properties such as AutomationId, Name, ControlType, ClassName, and UI hierarchy.
- Demonstrated ability to handle dynamic or inconsistent UI locators and build resilient automated tests.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and stabilize flaky or brittle automation.
- Experience with automated regression testing and test framework development.
- Experience integrating automation into Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar CI/CD environments.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Nice to Have

- Experience with both UIA2 and UIA3 automation.
- Experience with Playwright, particularly designing robust locator and page/component patterns.
- Experience with other Windows automation technologies such as WinAppDriver, Appium Windows Driver, or White.
- API and integration testing experience.
- Experience testing legacy or complex enterprise Windows applications.
- Experience with test reporting and test management platforms such as Azure DevOps Test Plans.
