DESCRIPTION:

Under the guidance of the Release of Information Coordinator, this position works to ensure that the release of patient information is in accordance with hospital policies, and legislative requirements.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Complete requests for information from external agencies, law offices, other hospitals, health care agencies, patients and their families.
- Maintain workload database on all requests received for release of information.
- Prepare applicable invoices according to fee standards.
- Answer any queries regarding release of information to patients and their families, internal stakeholders, external agencies, law offices and health care agencies.
- Provide statistics to Privacy Office and Finance Department.
- Assist patients with requests to view their health information.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Graduate of an approved Health Information Management program – Community College or Canadian Hospital Association Correspondence Program.
- Certified active member of the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
- One year Release of Information experience in the last 5 years preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of various legislation pertaining to release of personal health information (Personal Health Information Protection Act,



Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Public Hospital Act, Mental Health Act, Coroner’s Act, Vital Statistics Act, Consent to Treatment Act).
- Must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to work closely with patients, external agencies, law offices, etc.
- Computer literacy and keyboarding skills with Windows, Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, Access, Word, Powerpoint.
- Thorough knowledge of the functions within the Health Information Services Department.
- Excellent attendance record and punctuality.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with physicians and hospital staff.
- Must safeguard the confidentiality of patients’ personal health information.
- Excellent decision making, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Must be highly motivated and organized.
- The ability to show initiative and work in an independent manner.
- Proven ability to attend work regularly.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent will be required to meet the physical demands as described for the area of work.
