The Clinical Informatician role is a senior professional role reporting to Executive Directors, Directors or Managers in the CMIO office. As a recognized Connect Care expert, a Clinical Informatician applies clinical skill and experience, clinical information system knowledge and systems thinking to identify Connect Care improvement opportunities and to prototype and build improvements to Connect Care clinical content and workflows.

Clinical

Informaticians work closely with multidisciplinary clinical and technical Clinical System Improvement (CSI) teams and Connect Care governance structures.

Clinical

Informaticians work within the Clinical Informatics Program. Informaticians in these roles use their knowledge of clinical system design, health care delivery systems, evaluation and process improvement to develop and maintain the clinical architecture framework and clinical content standards for Connect Care. They also support the effective operation of other improvement, quality, clinical operations, and prescriber committees/structures where impacts to clinical systems are involved.

As recognized Connect Care and clinical system improvement experts, Informaticians apply high degrees of resourcefulness, insight and independent judgement to determine and represent the unique and complex issues associated with supporting both strategic and operational priorities. Working in a fast-paced and demanding environment, they can evaluate and resolve clinically and/or organizationally sensitive issues that may have considerable impact to healthcare service delivery. Finally, as a member of an emerging discipline, ideal candidates will demonstrate deep commitment to process development and improvement, including creative problem solving and a commitment to knowledge translation and sharing, coaching and leadership responsibilities.

Description

Clinical Informaticians are change agents who work closely with clinicians, prescribers and other staff to understand their clinical needs and co-design improvements in clinical workflow, content and build within Connect Care. In this process,



Clinical Informaticians leverage their skills in knowledge translation, clinical system design and their knowledge of clinical workflows, adoption and change management. More specifically, key functions include:

- Understand Connect Care user needs and priorities. Working across teams and initiatives within the health system entities (e.g. CSI teams, Connect Care governance structures, quality improvement teams, patient safety), Clinical Informaticians identify Connect Care improvement opportunities, develop comprehensive improvement plans and support the overall prioritization of the work.
- Build optimized Connect Care clinical content.

Clinical

Informaticians collaborate with clinicians to co-design Connect Care clinical content and workflows and improvements as user needs change, clinical practice evolves, and improvement priorities emerge. This work requires the Informatician to use their extensive knowledge and expertise to synthesize evidence-based clinical knowledge and guidance (including external references) to design and build clinically appropriate and accurate content that supports optimized workflows.

- Inform change management and user education and support changes. Improvements to Connect Care clinical content, workflows and build trigger the need to communicate changes to end users and the Digital Health teams that support them.

Required Qualifications

Undergraduate degree required; clinical background required strongly encouraged. A minimum of 5 years of progressively more responsible roles in clinical informatics.

A minimum of 10 years of experience in either: Direct provision of healthcare in a clinical role, or Directly working with practicing clinicians in an informatics capacity, with a strong working knowledge and intimate understanding of healthcare delivery.

Additional Required Qualifications

Demonstrated understanding of clinical best practice, quality improvement frameworks and clinical system design best practices. Detail oriented with a demonstrated ability to probe for information in order to fully understand the underlying clinical needs. A commitment to service excellence and demonstrated success in working with clinical teams to improve processes and outcomes.

Ability to work in a virtual team environment to build and maintain positive working relationships. Ability to lead complex discussions and negotiate solutions. Proven project management skills (ability to lead meetings, prioritize, resolve conflicts, maintain issues list, manage project plan).

Competence in the use of standard office tools and technologies, including MS Office, Visio, Sharepoint etc. Demonstrated working knowledge of the Alberta health system. Strong time management skills and the ability to meet project deadlines are essential.

Solid communication and follow-up skills.

Experience mentoring and supporting junior staff. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development. Self-motivated with little supervision required.

Preferred Qualifications

More than 5 years of progressively more responsible roles in health informatics. CPHIMS Certification an asset. Epic certification or proficiency or completion of the Epic Clinician Builder Program.
