Senior Engineer - Generation Stations Mechanical Engineering

Annual salary: $ 109,700.00 - 138,700.00

What you'll do

This Engineer will work in the General Design Team, part of the Generation Stations Mechanical Engineering Division, on a range of projects pertaining primarily to BC Hydro’s water retention, water conveyance and power generation assets.

Projects vary in scale from small single discipline projects to larger, multi-discipline projects with project costs in excess of several million dollars.

Duties of the position may include:

- Perform conceptual through detailed design engineering of hoists, cranes, hydraulic gates, lifting devices, large flow

control valves, hydraulic power systems, stoplogs, and other similar equipment.
- Work with BC Hydro staff members, other external consultants and suppliers to review and accept their work on behalf of

BC Hydro in the role of Owner’s Engineer to ensure accuracy and achievement of required results and adherence to engineering good practices and standards.
- Collaborate, support, and assist other disciplines like protection and control, electrical, civil, geotechnical, estimating,

procurement, quality management, construction management, and project management.




- Work with project teams including engineers, dam safety personnel, operations personnel, project managers,

environmental professionals, and other stakeholders, to help develop the scope, objectives, and user requirements of individual projects.
- Lead the engineering work on low complexity projects.
- Work under the technical direction of more experienced engineers on medium-to-high complexity projects.
- Provide work leadership to EITs and support staff.
- Perform detailed searches of background information including drawings, previous reports, construction information,

previous project information, maintenance information, condition assessments, etc.
- Prepare detailed summaries of background information.
- Develop and assess conceptual solutions.
- Plan and implement field investigations and site visits as required for obtaining information on site conditions.
- Prepare working design bases for design tasks to document the design objectives, design criteria, technical references

used, load cases and combinations, analysis methodology, design assumptions, and any other relevant design information. What you bring

- A degree in mechanical engineering recognized by Canadian universities.
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists British

Columbia (EGBC).
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant practical experience.
- Excellent command of English language (written and spoken).
- Self-motivation and the ability to work independently yet recognize limitations and ask for guidance when necessary.
- Be able to demonstrate the values of safety, teamwork, service, integrity, accountability, and ingenuity.

The following qualifications are an asset:
- Design expertise in one or more of hoists, bridge cranes, gantry cranes, other crane types,



below-the-hook lifting devices,

spillway gates, intake gates, draft tube gates, large water flow control valves, or comparable equipment.
- Maintenance experience including repairs or modifications.
- Experience in performance investigations, installation of new equipment, or upgrades.
- Work experience in the hydroelectric industry with a consulting firm, equipment supplier, or utility.

What else you should know

- Please note this is a temporary opportunity for approximately two (2) years.
- Candidates with lesser relevant experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for a lower level role.
- A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Class 5 Driver's License: In good standing.
- Field visits are typically once per month for three to four days but may be more frequent and/or longer depending on

project needs.
- Travel to and work at field locations including to remote locations, outside in inclement weather, at heights using fall
