The purpose of this position is to lead the research, development, and implementation of improvements to the school food environment with the goal of improving the health, food literacy, well-being, and educational outcomes for students. This position is responsible for supporting, collaborating with, responding to the needs of the Department of Education and Early Years, Education Authorities (Public Schools Branch and La Commission scolaire de langue française) and collaborating and consulting with internal/external education system partners.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

- Lead the implementation of school nutrition policies which reflect current best practice and alignment with Canada’s Food Guide and the vision, principles, and objectives of the Federal Government’s National School Food Policy;
- Conduct thorough environmental scans of work within other Provinces/Territories and/or school boards that have updated their respective school nutrition policies;
- Lead consultation processes with internal/external stakeholders;
- Develop project strategic work plans and oversee project development through planning, establishing goals and objectives, researching and interpreting evidence and best practices, implementation, assessment, and evaluation;
- Provide regular updates and reports to the Department of Education and Early Years, Education Authorities, and relevant government departments;
- Ensure the updated school nutrition policies are in alignment with:
- the vision, principles, and objectives of the Federal Government’s National School Food Policy;
- best practice approaches related to school food allergens and anaphylaxis; and
- the newly updated Early Childhood Health Living Guidelines where appropriate;





- Support the Education Authority’s needs as they implement new school environment policies including support in identifying and addressing barriers to implementing school nutrition policies;
- Support the Education Authorities in the development of goals, objectives, and reporting processes specific to healthy eating in schools;
- Support the Department of Education and Early Years and the Education Authorities in the development of goals, objectives, and best practices related to enhancing food literacy skills in the school population;
- Support the Department of Education and Earley Years English and French Education Programs and Services divisions in the development and implementation of curriculum outcomes related to enhanced food literacy;
- Support the development of processes that help ensure food provided through school food programs and respective contracts if applicable (e.g. breakfast, snack, lunch (PEI School Food Inc., cafeteria vendors, outside vendors) comply with school nutrition policies;
- Collaborate with Education Authorities and school staff to enhance knowledge, skills, and strategies that support sustainable school nutrition policy compliance beyond the project's duration;
- Manage and report on program resource utilization;
- Support the development of tools regarding project evaluation and reporting;
- Oversee internal (cross-departmental memos, briefing notes, etc.) and external or public-facing communications (social media accounts, presentations, etc.); and
- Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Undergraduate Degree in Education, Health, Public Health, or other Social Sciences.
- Experience in evidence-based public health policy and program development and implementation.
- Experience working in child and youth programs relating to nutrition, food service and food literacy.
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in child and youth health and development, health promotion, and the social determinants of health.
- Demonstrated ability to obtain and interpret scientific research and evidence-based best practices to provide advice on current project planning and policy development.
- Must be able to work independently and be highly self-motivated and directed.
- Must be highly proficient and competent with computer technology (E.g.,



MS Office 365 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams video conferencing, search engines etc.).
- Must be able to present information in a explicit, concise, and accurate manner.
- Must be adept at conducting research, analyze, and creatively solve problems.
- Must be able to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language, actively listen, work collaboratively, and effectively prioritize.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle.

Other Qualifications:

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the PEI public school system, in school or community-based child and youth food literacy programs, and school food programs are an asset.
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Foods and Nutrition and or completed equivalent program from a recognized university is an asset.
- Successful completion of an accredited dietetic internship program and registration with the PEI Dietitian Registration Board is an asset.
- Bilingualism is an asset.
- Additional relevant education and experience in food service, school nutrition policy and implementation or food literacy is an asset.
