POSITION SUMMARY:

The Addictions Counsellor provides structured counselling, case management, assessment, and group facilitation for patients participating in Cedars’ residential addiction treatment program. Working as part of an interdisciplinary clinical team, the Counsellor supports patients from admission through discharge by identifying treatment goals, delivering evidence-informed interventions, monitoring progress and risk, coordinating family and referral involvement, and supporting continuing-care planning.

This role requires sound clinical judgment, strong professional boundaries, accurate documentation, effective group facilitation, and a practical understanding of substance use disorders, concurrent mental health concerns, trauma, and recovery-oriented care.

Assessment, Counselling, And Case Management

- Maintain an assigned caseload and provide regular individual counselling and case management.
- Complete biopsychosocial assessments and contribute to individualized treatment planning.
- Work collaboratively with patients and the clinical team to establish, review, and evaluate treatment goals.
- Monitor patient progress, treatment engagement, readiness for change, and barriers to recovery.
- Identify concerns related to suicidality, self-harm, deterioration, or other clinical risk and escalate promptly in accordance with Cedars procedures.

Group Facilitation & Clinical Programming
- Facilitate therapeutic groups, psychoeducational sessions, workshops, lectures, and other clinical programming as scheduled.
- Use evidence-informed approaches appropriate to patient needs, including motivational, cognitive-behavioural, skills-based, relapse-prevention, and trauma-informed interventions.
- Maintain a structured, respectful, and emotionally safe group environment while promoting participation, accountability, and recovery-oriented behaviour.

Treatment Coordination & Continuity of Care
- Participate actively in clinical team meetings, case conferences, treatment reviews, and interdisciplinary planning.
- Collaborate with Clinical Therapists, nursing, Community Support Workers, Admissions, Continuing Care, Recovery Coaches, and other team members regarding patient needs and treatment progress.
- Coordinate appropriate involvement of families and significant others, including family conferences, within consent and confidentiality requirements.
- Liaise with referral sources, funding bodies, employers, emergency contacts, and external providers as appropriate.




- Support discharge and continuing-care planning and prepare timely discharge summaries or reports for approved recipients.

Documentation & Professional Practice
- Maintain accurate, objective, timely, and clinically relevant documentation in the patient health record.
- Protect patient privacy and confidentiality and share information only in accordance with consent, policy, and professional standards.
- Maintain clear professional boundaries and model respectful, trauma-informed, culturally safe, and recovery-oriented practice.
- Participate in supervision, training, case consultation, and career development.
- Maintain current knowledge of Cedars’ clinical policies, procedures, treatment philosophy, and documentation standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

- Post-secondary education in addictions, counselling, psychology, social work, human services, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant formal training and substantial related experience.
- Minimum one year of experience in residential addiction treatment, mental health, acute care, community treatment, or a closely related environment.
- Demonstrated experience providing individual counselling, case management, and group facilitation.
- Working knowledge of substance use disorders, concurrent disorders, trauma-informed practice, and recovery-oriented models of care.
- Ability to assess and respond appropriately to clinical risk, including suicidality, self-harm, emotional deterioration, and crisis.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to produce professional clinical documentation.
- Strong qualified boundaries and the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check.

Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in counselling, psychology, social work, addictions, or a related discipline.
- Professional certification or registration relevant to addiction counselling, such as CACCF certification, RSW, RCC, CCC, or eligibility for registration.
- Training or experience in motivational interviewing, CBT, DBT-informed skills, relapse prevention, trauma-informed care, family systems, or other evidence-informed approaches.
- ASIST, suicide-intervention, crisis-intervention, or de-escalation training.
- Experience working with complex concurrent disorders and multidisciplinary treatment teams.

Candidates who identify as being in recovery must have a minimum of two years of continuous substance-free time and be actively engaged in a stable recovery program. :
