Description
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Archives Assistant will assist in the physical maintenance of collections. This may include:
- Re-boxing and re-foldering records
- Creating inventories/box lists
- Matching records with inventories/box lists,
- Physically relocating large collections, some of which may have national historical significance.
- Basic archival conservation and preservation work, including surface cleaning and other rehabilitation of dirty and/or damaged records The Archives Assistant will assist with all other aspects of archival services. This may include:
- Completion of digitization projects
- Assisting with reference services, research, and records retrieval
- Supervised application of processing and preservation priority metrics to archival records
- Creation of written copy for use on the Archives website, blog, and social media promotions
- Preparation of general correspondence
- Assisting with Archives donation and accessioning paperwork
- Providing general word processing
- Laundering white cotton gloves at an adjacent building The Archives Assistant will perform other duties as required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
• Must be a registered full time post-secondary student in an approved co-op program.
- Must have completed a criminal reference check from within the last 6 months.
- Must be able to lift boxes up to 45 lbs to shoulder height
- Experience with historical and/or archival research would be an asset
- Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills are a must.
- Software experience with Windows, MS Office, and Internet applications.
o Fluency in MS Word and Excel would be an asset.
o Proficiency in Adobe software (e.g. Acrobat, Photoshop) would be an asset o Experience with digital imaging, digitization, and digital image editing would be assets
- Customer service experience would be an asset
- Good people skills
