Position Summary Under the supervision of the Director of Residential Education, the Assistant Director of Learning & Leadership performs a variety of student development and residential education functions, overall coordination and implementation of leadership development, and supports Living Community Initiatives. In addition to the essential duties listed, the AD collaborates with colleagues to provide support in staff development and assessment initiatives.
The Assistant Director supervises 2-3 Resident Directors and the Program Coordinator for Residential Education. The AD indirectly supervises 3-4 Graduate Resident Directors, 20-30 Resident Mentors/Apartment Managers, and the Marketing and Digital Media Assistant.
Essential Functions
Leadership & Supervision
- Directly supervise, develop, and evaluate a team consisting of 2-3 Resident Directors, 3-4 Graduate Resident Director, the Program
- Coordinator for Residential Education, and indirectly supervise student staff.
- Create and facilitate training and developmental opportunities for professional and graduate staff.
- Regularly provide formal and informal feedback regarding job performance.
- Establish and maintain a culture of accountability and professional & personal growth.
- Ensure that essential functions of assigned areas are maintained during periods of absence.
- Facilitate regular meetings and one-on-ones with area teams and direct reports.
- Serve as primary contact for residents, parents, and families, and campus partners for assigned areas.
Community Development
- Oversee the design, development, and implementation of HRE’s Residential Education Model (REM), including integration of DU’s 4D Student Experience.
- In collaboration with key campus partners,
facilitate co-curricular opportunities such as living communities and joint programming.
- Plan and support large-scale departmental and traditions events.
- Regularly assess student experiences, engagement, and development.
- Collaborate with the Director of Residential Education to coordinate, partner, and evaluate HRE Living Communities.
- Oversee the design, implementation, and programming of three Oasis Spaces.
Student Leadership Development:
- Oversee the design, development, and implementation of leadership development initiatives tailored to the needs and goals of residential students.
- Benchmark and assess leadership initiatives to measure the impact and effectiveness that are responsive to current theory and best practices.
- Oversee the coordination of workshops, training and development opportunities on competencies related to leadership development.
- Coordinate attendance and representation at regional and national student leadership conferences.
- Create and maintain a curriculum for leadership development programs.
- Design and oversee all hall council initiatives.
- Manage the budget for hall councils.
- Design and facilitate training and ongoing development for hall council advisors.
Student Behavior & Conduct:
- Serve as a High-Level Case Resolution Officer and appellate for potential violations of the Guide to Residential Living and Honor
- Code in accordance with Student Rights & Responsibilities (SRR)
- Regularly review incident reports and referrals for assigned areas and coordinate additional responses as necessary.
On-Call
- Serve on Senior Administrator-on-Call (SAOC) rotation, supporting critical incident and crisis response for the DU community.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for key campus partners and leadership in the event of a crisis or critical incident.
- Provide consultation to professional and student on-call staff.
Departmental Initiatives & Special Projects
- Oversee an area budget by ensuring that allocations are appropriately managed by tracking expenditures, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring that assigned areas remain within budget allocations.
- Serve on 1-2 departmental standing committees, with the opportunity to serve on divisional or university committees/workgroups.
- Attend events and programs sponsored by HRE and/or SAIE that periodically occur outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong attention to detail, with a highly organized approach to data/project management.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with a diverse population of administrators, faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
- Understanding of housing operations and processes,
- Knowledge of legal issues, federal and state laws, and risk management practices.
- Supervisory experience.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in student Affairs/College Personnel, Business, or a related area of study.
- 1-2 years of post-master’s work experience within residence life or a related field.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience with an ability to work effectively with staff and students.
- Demonstrated record of building teams and collaborative partnerships with colleagues and key stakeholder groups.
- Commitment to equity and social justice.
- Strong operational experience.
- Evening office hours and occasional weekend commitments are expected.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in student Affairs/College Personnel, Business, or a related area of study.
- 2-4 years of supervisory experience.
- Experience supervising graduate staff.
- Demonstrated housing operations experience and related competencies.
Work Schedule This position requires employees to work onsite 8:00am-4:30pm with occasional evening, weekends, and holiday shifts. (Schedules vary by department and position.) Staff are expected to support student Hallmark, Tradition and other program events throughout the year. The University of Denver and Student Affairs recognize the utilization of flexible work arrangements where these arrangements are operationally appropriate, and supervisor approved.
Working Environment
Working Environment: Standard office environment, unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high, noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
Physical Activities: Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time, occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 9.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $58,000 - $60,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
