Business Development Representative

SmartSkin Technologies · Atlantic Canada, Halifax preferred

SmartSkin Technologies is continuing to build the commercial capability behind a business that has grown significantly over the past several years.

The next addition is a dedicated Business Development Representative who will focus on creating recent conversations and qualified opportunities for SmartSkin's experienced Account Management team.

SmartSkin has retained Hawthorne Recruitment to lead this search.

Reports to : Manager, Sales Operations

Function : First dedicated business development role within the organization

Location : Halifax and Fredericton Preferred, or Atlantic Canada, with occasional travel to Fredericton

Compensation : $50,000 to $65,000 base, plus variable compensation tied to qualified meetings and pipeline creation The Opportunity

This is the first dedicated role of its kind within the organization, which makes it somewhat different from a conventional BDR position.

SmartSkin already has the commercial infrastructure around the role: target accounts, CRM and reporting tools, specialized plant-level market intelligence, marketing programs and an experienced global sales team.

What it does not yet have is a finished outbound playbook. The person joining will therefore have the opportunity to help determine what effective business development looks like at SmartSkin while remaining very close to the work itself.

This is a hands-on role for someone who likes prospecting, enjoys opening doors and is comfortable figuring out what works.

The Mandate The objective is simple: create qualified conversations for SmartSkin's Account Managers.

That will include identifying the right contacts within target organizations, reaching them through phone, email and other channels, qualifying interest and creating a strong hand-off into the sales team.

The role will work across both new and existing accounts.

SmartSkin already works with major global pharmaceutical and beverage manufacturers, but its penetration within many of those organizations remains relatively small. That creates meaningful prospect to identify additional plants, teams and decision-makers within companies that already know SmartSkin.

The BDR will also follow up on leads generated through webinars, trade shows and marketing activity while building disciplined outbound prospecting into new accounts.

A Different Sales Environment

SmartSkin may operate with a recurring software model, but its customer is not the typical SaaS buyer.

The people this role needs to reach often work in manufacturing, operations, engineering and quality roles inside production facilities.

They may not spend their days at a desk or respond to the standard automated prospecting approaches common in software sales. That makes the phone particularly important.

It also means the strongest BDR will bring judgment alongside activity: someone prepared to make the calls,

but thoughtful enough to test different approaches, understand what is generating results and adjust accordingly.

What You Will Do

- Prospect into target accounts across North America and Europe using phone, email, LinkedIn and other appropriate channels.
- Identify the right contacts within manufacturing facilities and create qualified meetings for SmartSkin's Account Managers.
- Develop and refine outreach sequences, messaging, cadence and follow-up approaches.
- Work leads generated through webinars, events and other marketing programs.
- Use account and plant-level intelligence to prioritize outreach.
- Maintain accurate activity and opportunity information within Salesforce.
- Track results and work with Sales Operations to understand what is converting and where the approach should change.
- Share market feedback with the broader commercial team as the business development function evolves.

Over time, the person in this role will also help SmartSkin understand how the BDR function should develop and scale. The Person The strongest candidate will likely have already spent meaningful time in a prospecting-driven commercial role.

That could come from a traditional BDR or SDR environment, outsourced business development, inside sales, telecommunications, industrial sales, distribution, technical products or another environment where creating new conversations is an important part of the job.

SmartSkin is less concerned with finding someone who fits a conventional SaaS profile than it is with finding someone who has the right commercial instincts.

You are likely someone who:

- Is comfortable and confident prospecting by phone.
- Gets satisfaction from creating the opening rather than needing to own every stage of the sale.
- Can operate independently without waiting for a manager to prescribe every next step.
- Is curious and willing to experiment with different approaches.
- Thinks about both activity and effectiveness.
- Uses data and feedback to improve how you work.
- Communicates clearly and credibly with senior professionals.
- Can work effectively in an environment where some processes are still being built.

Experience selling into manufacturing, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, CPG or another industrial environment would be helpful, but is not essential. SaaS experience is equally welcome, provided the candidate understands that SmartSkin's buyers and sales motion are different from a conventional software workplace.

Motivation Matters

This is an important part of the profile.

SmartSkin is not positioning the role as a standard twelve-month BDR-to-AE progression.

Its Account Managers are experienced industry specialists, and the future path from this role will depend on both the individual and how the commercial organization develops.

For someone motivated by building, prospecting and becoming genuinely good at creating new opportunities, that can be compelling.

As SmartSkin grows, there may be opportunities to take on broader responsibility or help develop the business development function further, but the immediate opportunity is to make this role successful.

Reporting and Support The role reports to the Manager, Sales Operations.

Sales Operations owns much of the infrastructure surrounding the commercial team, including CRM, account and contact data, reporting, forecasting, territory management and sales technology.

That function will provide significant support around targeting, data, tools and performance measurement.

The expectation, however, is that the successful candidate will bring enough experience and initiative to own the day-to-day execution of the business development work.

Location The role can be based in Atlantic Canada, with Halifax preferred.

Halifax provides the opportunity for regular in-person collaboration with Sales Operations while maintaining the flexibility of a primarily remote role.

Fredericton is also a natural location given SmartSkin's headquarters, and candidates elsewhere in Atlantic Canada can be considered.

Occasional travel to Fredericton and other company activities should be expected.

Compensation

SmartSkin has currently established a base salary range of $50,000 to $65,000, with variable compensation tied to qualified meetings and pipeline creation.

There is some flexibility for the right candidate, particularly where previous experience allows the successful person to operate with greater independence from the outset.

Benefits include company-paid health and dental coverage and Group RRSP matching.

Why SmartSkin

SmartSkin is a New Brunswick-founded technology company operating in a highly specialized global market.

Its sensor and software platform helps pharmaceutical and beverage manufacturers understand what happens to containers as they move through production lines, allowing customers to identify damaging forces, improve performance and reduce manufacturing risk.

The company has grown considerably over the past several years and is continuing to invest in the sophistication of its commercial organization.

For the right person, this is an opportunity to join that growth at a point where there is still meaningful room to build.
