Casual, on-call position, starting as soon as possible

Position:

As a Boarding school, we provide access to medical care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Nursing team works both day and evening shifts between the hours of 7:30 am and 9:30 pm, and overnight as required, to look after students' medical needs. The hours vary on weekdays and weekends. On-call nurses work outside Health Centre operating hours.

The Casual Nurse is needed primarily for on-call overnight , particularly Friday, Saturday and Sundays, including long weekends. They may also be given the opportunity to work during the Health Centre operating hours if interested.

When on-call, the Nurse will be expected to answer phone calls from house parents for any health-related concerns. The Nurse needs to be available to arrive on campus within 20 minutes, if needed, to assess and care for students. If students are already in the Observation area, the on-call Nurse will be notified prior to the start of the shift that they are required to be on campus.

Responsibilities include :

- Available to answer phone calls from house parents for any health-related concerns.
- When on call, must be able to arrive on campus within 20 minutes if required.
- Available to stay overnight on campus providing care to student(s) if required.
- Use clinical judgement to determine course of care, including when to send student(s) to ER for further assessments.
- Provide health care duties such as first aid treatment for minor ailments and injuries and administering medications as needed.




- Ability to work independently and seek support from Boarding staff as needed.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with Boarding staff as needed.
- Checking supplies and emergency equipment.
- Ability to work with digital medical records.
- Ability to document all relevant information for the next nurse on duty and email Head Nurse any updates during shift.

Under the direction of the Head Nurse :

- Provides preventative health care, promotion of health and health awareness through seminars, if interested.
- Orientate to work in the Health Centre during operational hours.
- Suggest referrals to the school counselors when appropriate.
- Ability to be flexible as needs may change, resulting in changing shifts and hours of work.

The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest:

- This position requires a current membership in good standing with the BC College of Nursing Professionals along with a minimum of two years’ experience in a related position.
- A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or a Licensed Practical Nursing diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Current CPR Level C certification.
- Adherence to the BC Standards for Nursing Practice.
- Proactive approach to preventative health care.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, with internal and external customers.
- Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, and work as a positive and team-oriented team member.




- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, teachers, parents and staff.
- Ability to identify and assist students with emotional and other health concerns.
- Organized, with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Enthusiastic, energetic, a self-starter with the ability to work independently.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Pay Rate: The on-call rate of pay is $7.00 per hour. In-clinic pay range is $32.84 to $41.35 per hour (LPN1) or $36.58 - $55.91 (RN3) per hour.

Criminal Record Check:

Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
