Controller, CPA
Location: Remote — Canada or U.S.
Overview
Valor Gold is seeking a Controller (or an experienced Senior Accountant looking to progress) to join our team. We are looking for a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys working in a growth-oriented environment and wants the opportunity to take ownership of a broad range of accounting and financial reporting functions.
The ideal candidate will hold a CPA designation (or equivalent) and have strong experience across financial reporting, month-end and quarter-end close, internal controls, payroll, cash management, and management reporting. Experience working with a public company, particularly in the mining or resource exploration sector, is an asset.
This role will initially be on a fractional basis, with the potential to transition into a full-time position as the Company grows. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility and potentially grow into a Controller-level role over time.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the CFO, the Senior Accountant will handle a broad range of accounting and financial reporting activities and will play a significant role in supporting the Company’s accounting operations.
This is a hands-on position suited to someone who is comfortable working across the full accounting cycle and taking ownership of processes in a small-team environment.
Key Responsibilities
· Own the month-end and quarter-end close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, trial balances, and supporting working papers.
· Prepare interim and annual financial statements and notes in accordance with IFRS, and support the preparation of MD&A; for CFO review.
· Support the design, implementation, and maintenance of the Company’s internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) and disclosure controls and procedures (DC&P;).
· Maintain control narratives,
risk and control matrices, and supporting evidence for control performance and the Company’s quarterly and annual certification requirements under NI 52-109.
· Coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors, including preparation of audit working papers and responses to audit queries.
· Manage the accounts payable process, including invoice coding and approval, payment processing, and vendor reconciliations.
· Process semi-monthly U.S. and Canadian payroll and review and code employee expense reports, ensuring appropriate taxes are recorded and remitted.
· Prepare monthly management reporting, including cash position, burn-rate analysis, and budget-to-actual variances for review by the CFO and Board.
· Manage cash flow forecasting and treasury activities, including bank account administration and inter company funding.
· Assist with budgets, forecasts, and financial models to support corporate planning and financing activities.
· Support the CFO with SEDAR continuous disclosure filings and coordinate with the transfer agent, legal counsel, and other external advisors as needed.
· Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts, including accurate allocation of costs across projects and cost centres.
· Assist with GST/HST, payroll remittances, and other tax compliance matters, including coordination with external tax advisors.
· Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, reporting, and controls, including the effective use of QuickBooks and Expensify.
· Provide accounting and financial analysis support to the CFO and management team as required.
Must-Have Qualifications & Skills
· CPA designation or equivalent.
· 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including 1–2 years at a Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller, Controller, or similar level.
· Experience working within a public company environment. Experience in mining, resource exploration, or a related industry is an asset, but not mandatory.
· Strong working knowledge of IFRS, including experience preparing financial statements and related disclosures.
· Experience with month-end and quarter-end close, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
· Experience with ICFR/DC&P; and familiarity with NI 52-109 requirements.
· Experience coordinating with external auditors and supporting annual audits.
· Strong Excel skills, including experience working with financial data, reconciliations, reporting, and analysis.
· Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software/ERP systems.
· Comfortable working hands-on across the full accounting cycle, from accounts payable and payroll through to financial statement preparation.
· Solid analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with the CFO, management, auditors, advisors, and other stakeholders.
· Ability to manage competing priorities and meet month-end, quarter-end, and reporting deadlines.
· Comfortable working in a small-team environment with a high degree of ownership and accountability.
· Flexibility to provide occasional support outside regular working hours, particularly around quarter-end and other key reporting deadlines.
Pay: From $170,000.00 per year
