Position Title: Cultural & Language Revitalization Coordinator
Classification: Full time permanent (upon successful completion of probation)
Salary Range: $35- $40/ hr (commensurate with qualifications and experience)
Start Date: October 2026
Location: Magnetawan First Nation, 10 Highway 529, Britt, ON P0G 1A0
Hours of Work: Monday to Wednesday 8am-5:30pm Thursday’s 8am-4:30pm (Occasional evenings, weekends, and emergency callouts may be required.)
Position Summary
Magnetawan First Nation is seeking a Cultural & Language Revitalization Coordinator to support the revitalization, preservation, research, and promotion of Magnetawan First Nation’s Anishinaabe language (Ojibwe), culture, history, traditions, and community knowledge.
This is a shared position between the Governance and Social Services Departments, with administrative reporting through Governance. The coordinator will work closely with both departments, as well as Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, families, staff, and community members.
The position will have two interconnected areas of responsibility: strengthening the Nation’s cultural and historical knowledge through research, documentation, language revitalization, and governance-related initiatives; and developing culturally grounded programming that supports the work of the Social Services Department and the broader well-being of the community.
Key Responsibilities
Language and Cultural Revitalization
- Support the revitalization and increased use of Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) within Magnetawan First Nation.
- Develop and coordinate language classes, workshops, learning resources, and community language activities.
- Work with fluent speakers, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to support intergenerational language transmission.
- Develop cultural programming based on community priorities, including traditional teachings, land-based activities, seasonal practices, food harvesting and preparation, storytelling, arts, ceremonies, and other cultural activities.
- Create opportunities for children, youth, adults, families, and Elders to participate in cultural and language programming.
Cultural Research and Governance Support
- Research and document Magnetawan First Nation’s history, traditions, cultural practices, stories, teachings,
language, traditional place names, and other areas identified by the Nation.
- Work with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to preserve oral histories and community knowledge, subject to appropriate consent and cultural protocols.
- Research archival, historical, and other records relevant to Magnetawan First Nation.
- Assist Governance with cultural and historical research that may support Nation-building, law development, policies, citizenship, community planning, and other governance initiatives.
- Support the development of culturally appropriate policies, protocols, and resources where requested.
- Ensure that cultural information and research are managed in accordance with community ownership, confidentiality, Indigenous data sovereignty, and applicable cultural protocols.
Social Services Programming
- Work collaboratively with the Social Services Department to develop culturally grounded programs for children, youth, families, adults, and Elders.
- Incorporate language, culture, traditional teachings, and land-based activities into Social Services programming where appropriate.
- Assist with planning and delivering wellness, prevention, family, youth, Elder, and community-development initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen cultural identity and community connection through Social Services programs.
- Provide program coordination and implementation support as required.
Community Engagement
- Build respectful relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, language speakers, families, youth, and other community members.
- Gather community input regarding language and cultural revitalization priorities.
- Coordinate community gatherings, workshops, cultural events, and other learning opportunities.
- Develop partnerships with neighbouring First Nations, cultural organizations, educational institutions, language organizations, and other appropriate partners.
Funding and Program Administration
- Research funding opportunities related to language, culture, heritage, community development, social services, and Indigenous programming.
- Assist with preparing funding applications, workplans, budgets, reports, and program documentation.
- Maintain program records and participation information.
- Monitor programming outcomes and gather feedback to support continuous improvement.
- Work with Communications to promote programs and opportunities to community members.
Qualifications The successful candidate should have a combination of education, community knowledge, cultural understanding, and relevant experience, which may include:
- Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Anishinaabe Studies, Education, Social Services, History, Community Development, Language Studies, or a related area; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, traditions, values, history, and community practices.
- Experience with cultural, language, social, youth, family, or community programming.
- Strong research, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, families, staff, and community members.
- Experience conducting community-based or historical research would be an asset.
- Knowledge of Indigenous research principles, OCAP®, Indigenous data sovereignty, and cultural protocols would be an asset.
- Experience preparing funding proposals, reports, and program documentation would be an asset.
- Ability to speak or understand Anishinaabemowin would be a strong asset.
- Experience working within a First Nation community or Indigenous organization would be an asset.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel as required.
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check may be required.
