Believe in the future of local journalism? Here’s an opportunity to take the editorial lead at a respected East Toronto non-profit news organization that has been covering its communities since 1972, and help build what comes next.

This much-loved local news organization covers the people, neighbourhoods and issues that matter to our communities, from local government, development and politics to businesses, schools, arts, sports and the stories unfolding close to home.

We’re looking for a professional Community News Editor with strong news judgment, curiosity and ideas who can lead great local journalism while helping us build for the future. You’ll have the opportunity to guide how we report, tell and distribute stories across print, web, newsletters, social media and video, while using analytics and audience feedback to better understand our readers and how we can serve them.

We’re also a teaching newsroom, and mentoring the next generation of journalists is an important part of what we do. Our editor will work with experienced journalists and contributors as well as emerging reporters and storytellers who are developing their skills in a working community newsroom.

COMMUNITY AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP

- Represent Beach Metro in the community and maintain strong relationships with residents, community organizations and sources while preserving appropriate journalistic boundaries.
- Work with the Publisher/General Manager on newsroom staffing, resources, events, editorial planning and the continued development of Beach Metro as a strong, sustainable community news organization.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

- Five years of strong reporting, writing, editing and headline-writing skills,



excellent news judgment and a thorough knowledge of Canadian Press style.
- Journalism education or equivalent professional experience.
- A solid understanding of journalistic ethics, media law and ethics.
- Experience leading and mentoring staff, freelancers and contributors, with a genuine interest in developing emerging journalists.
- Strong digital publishing skills and experience with websites, newsletters, social media and multimedia storytelling.
- Comfort working with common newsroom and publishing tools, including content management systems such as Wordpress, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop skills is a plus.
- Familiarity with website and audience analytics and an ability to use that information to help guide editorial and audience decisions.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills and the ability to juggle deadlines, community inquires, sources and breaking news.
- Strong communication skills and an ability to build trusted relationships throughout the community.
- Knowledge of East Toronto and the communities Beach Metro serves is an asset.
- Curiosity about new storytelling approaches, digital tools and technology, including the responsible use of AI in journalism.
- A willingness to learn, experiment and help Beach Metro continue to evolve.
- Experience in community or local journalism is an asset.
