Position Overview The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive of Umbrella and is responsible for leading the implementation of the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic direction. The ED oversees all aspects of operations, including programs and services, financial and human resource management, fund development, communications, and stakeholder relations. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the ED plays a pivotal role in guiding the organization with integrity, empathy, and collaborative leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategic Direction
- Provide visionary leadership aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic plan.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive organizational culture.
- Lead the development and implementation of strategic goals in consultation with staff and the Board of Directors.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including funders, community partners, and government agencies.
Organizational Planning
- Conduct internal and external assessments to identify evolving community needs.
- Provide strategic guidance to the Board, including the development and execution of multi-year strategic plans.
- Ensure alignment between day-to-day operations and long-term organizational goals.
Program Management
- Oversee the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of all programs and services.
- Ensure clear, measurable objectives are established and regularly reviewed.
- Maintain robust systems for data collection, reporting, and performance measurement.
Policy Development & Compliance
- Develop, implement,
and regularly review organizational policies to ensure legal and ethical compliance.
- Ensure staff are informed of, and adhere to, agency policies and procedures.
- Uphold confidentiality and professionalism in all matters relating to clients, staff, and stakeholders.
Financial Oversight & Fund Development
- Ensure financial sustainability through sound budgeting, financial controls, and transparent reporting.
- Work with the Finance Team (Manager/Bookkeeper) to monitor budgets and financial forecasts.
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including service agreements, grants, donor cultivation, and fundraising campaigns.
- Maintain a donor database and ensure timely recognition of contributions.
Human Resources
- Oversee recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of administrative and management staff.
- Support management staff in HR practices for program teams.
- Promote a culture of respect, equity, inclusion, and professional development.
- Ensure transparent hiring processes and manage all grievance matters.
- Foster strong internal communication and a positive team environment.
Technology & Facilities Management
- Ensure facilities and equipment are maintained to support operational needs.
- Oversee the use of current technology to enhance efficiency, data collection, and reporting.
Community Relations & Advocacy
- Represent Umbrella in the community and advocate for clients, services, and related issues.
- Act as the organization’s spokesperson and media contact, or delegate as appropriate.
- Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, professionals, and all levels of government.
- Participate in relevant committees and initiatives that align with the agency’s mission.
Board Relations
- Serve as the main liaison to the Board of Directors and provide timely and accurate information to support governance.
- Assist the Board with strategic planning, recruitment, orientation, and development.
- Prepare Board meeting agendas and reports in collaboration with the Chair.
- Support the Annual General Meeting and other governance-related activities.
Qualifications Education & Experience
- A graduate or undergraduate degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Public Health, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience in the non-profit or social services sector.
- Demonstrated commitment to mental health and substance use support and recovery.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
