Lanark County Interval House and Community Support is a shelter and support network for women and children who are navigating, fleeing, or dealing with abuse or violence.
The Family Court Support Worker (FCSW) provides support to victims of family violence who are navigating the family court process. The worker is responsible for assisting service users with preparing for and navigating the family court system and process. Additionally, the Family Court Support Worker collaborates and advocates with other agencies, maintains records and participates in team collaboration.
Responsibilities / Accountabilities
Direct Service
- Receive referrals from community-based organizations and the internal agency.
- Assess the client's situation, gather relevant information, and develop a plan tailored to their needs.
- Prioritize cases based on the urgency of the situation.
- Provide clients with direct support, information, referrals, and guidance to keep them well informed and adequately prepared throughout their family court proceedings.
- Develop and implement safety plans for clients, encompassing safety measures not only for court appearances but also within their communities and homes.
- Conduct meetings with clients using various platforms, such as phone, video calls, or in-person, depending on individual preferences or accessibility.
- Engage in outreach activities to accommodate clients in diverse locations and situations.
- Collaborate with other community agencies, including family and children's services.
Family Court Navigation and Support
- Maintain working relationships with legal counsel and court workers.
- Assist clients in connecting to and navigating the Legal Aid system.
- Attending meetings with lawyers to provide support, assisting clients to comprehend the legal aspects of their cases.
- Accompany clients to court during family court proceedings.
- Understand the various court documents and timelines involved in family court proceedings.
Administration, Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records, progress notes and program related data.
- Stay up to date with the latest developments in family law, including researching specific cases and legal requirements.
- Maintain registration with Luke’s Place and participate in training.
- Provide regular updates to supervisors and participate in supervision as required.
- Complete and deliver annual reporting as required.
Position Related Qualifications (Technical, Education, Experience)
- Bachelor’s degree or College Diploma in a related field or related experience.
- 2-5 years of experience in a social service role, preferably working with women and children impacted by violence.
- Familiarity with a feminist and anti-oppressive approach.
- Familiarity and experience working from a trauma informed, harm reduction approach.
- Knowledge of the Canadian Legal System.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and coordination skills.
- Knowledge of community resources, government support programs and the legal system.
- Flexibility and adaptability to accommodate the unique needs of each client and non-judgmental and empathetic approach.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues and community resources.
Hours: 35.0 hours per week. Rate: $31.71 per hour – unionized position
Probationary period of 3 months.
