FTE: 1.0, 35 Hours per Week
This is a temporary position with an expected end date of August 31, 2027
This is a year-round position and is eligible to participate in the organization's Earned Days Off (EDO) program, providing additional scheduled time off from June to August in accordance with program guidelines.
Additional Information
The CBE understands the future of work is flexible. In this role, you are eligible to participate in a flexible work program that allows you to work remotely for up to three days a week. A minimum of two days must be in the office. At certain times, you maybe be required to work in the office more then 2 days per week based on operational requirements.
Position Description
Purpose This job prepares and interprets financial data for schools and service units across the Calgary Board of Education and is responsible for analyzing trends and preparing reports to support both departmental budgets, as well as the Calgary Board of Education’s annual operating budget. In addition, this job is also responsible for advising and consulting senior operational staff and/or financial representatives within the CBE, as well as providing training and support to staff on budget planning and management.
Accountability
- Financial Data Preparation and Interpretation
- Collect, validate and interpret financial data for schools and service units
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial information for reporting purposes
- Budget Support and Monitoring
- Support the preparation of departmental budgets and the CBE’s annual operating budget
- Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis to identify risks and opportunities
- Trend Analysis and Reporting
- Analyze financial trends and prepare detailed reports for decision-making
- Present findings to school/service unit leaders and financial representatives
- Advisory and Consultation
- Provide expert advice on financial planning, resource allocation, and cost optimization
- Act as a trusted consultant to school and service unit leaders
- Compliance and Policy Adherence
- Ensure all financial activities comply with organizational policies and relevant regulations
- Maintain internal controls to safeguard financial integrity
- Collaboration and Process Improvement
- Work with cross-functional teams to streamline financial processes
- Recommend improvements to reporting systems and budgeting practices
Major responsibilities
- Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial data for multiple schools and service units
- Develop and maintain reports to support school and service unit budgets as well as the CBE’s annual operating budget
- Conduct trend analysis and variance reporting to identify risks and opportunities
- Advise and consult leaders of schools/service units and financial representatives on financial planning and decision-making
- Provide training and guidance to staff on budget preparation, monitoring, and management
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies and financial regulations
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to improve financial processes and reporting accuracy
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Completion of a post-secondary degree in a business-related discipline
- Professional accounting designation required.
- A minimum of 5 years progressively more responsible experience in a budgeting, financial reporting, and/or analytical environment in a large sized organization.
- Public sector experience is considered an asset.
- Excellent proficiency working with large, complex financial management and human resource information systems and desktop tools such as databases and spreadsheets.
- Knowledge of budgeting principles and financial regulations.
- An equivalent combination of directly related post-secondary education and directly related experience may be considered.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
- Demonstrated high verbal and written communication skills are essential.
- Ability to respond to requests in a fast paced environment.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Personal suitability.
