As a Fire Management Supervisor, you will be entrusted with the critical responsibility of providing strategic oversight in the planning, coordination, and implementation of both operational and technical aspects of our fire management program. Stationed at the Fire Management Headquarters in Chapleau, your role is pivotal in shaping the direction and effectiveness of our efforts to manage and mitigate the impact of wildland fires. We are seeking an individual with a proven track record of success and leadership in the strategic planning and management of a wildland fire management program.

This is an opportunity to bring your expertise to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services branch, where your contributions will be instrumental in safeguarding our forests and communities.

About Us:

The Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Branch provides wildland fire management services for the province including wildland fire management policies and strategies, fire prevention and detection, and the resources for managing wildland fires; aviation flight and maintenance crews and equipment in support of wildland fire and natural resources management, and other specialized aviation services, including non-scheduled air transport to all government ministries and agencies; and emergency management in response to wildland fires, floods, drought/low water, dam failures, erosion, soil and bedrock instability, crude oil and natural gas exploration, natural gas and hydrocarbon underground storage, and salt solution mining emergencies.

- Provide program leadership in the administration, coordination and delivery of wildland fire management business
- Liaise closely with the district manager, forest industry, community officials, other stakeholders and the public
- Ensure the level of protection from wildland fires as directed by the Ontario government is provided
- Contribute to the ministry's goal of ecological sustainability
- Ensure the ecological role of wildland fire and its impacts on the landscape are well understood and utilized

What you bring to the team

Strategic Leadership Skills:

- You have strategic leadership and management skills to provide leadership to a diverse, multi-disciplined team and oversee and schedule work in accordance with corporate, divisional and branch priorities.
- You have demonstrated experience developing, building and leading organizational capacity through inclusive, positive, and values-based leadership in areas of organizational design, recruitment, talent and performance management and labour relations matters.




- You have the ability to be responsible for the overall compliance with legislative statutes, collective agreements, government and ministry policies, directives, guidelines and commitments related services.
- You have sound judgement and political acuity skills to provide authoritative advice and guidance to senior management.
- You have experience developing and managing a budget, approving expenses, and procuring goods and services within relevant directives, including the financial Delegation of Authority.

Technical Expertise:

- You have knowledge and understanding of resource management principles and their inter-relationship and significance as they relate to wildland fire management.
- You have a thorough understanding of the principles and practices used in control of wildland fires, fire operations, wildland fire management strategies and fire behaviour.
- You have a proven ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation such as the Forest Fires Prevention Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and other regulations and guidelines.
- You have a demonstrated ability to function in a broad range of senior supervisory/technical positions in emergency situations.

Communication and Stakeholder Relationship Skills:

- You have a proven ability to develop and manage partnerships and contracts to achieve program goals and objectives.
- You have excellent oral communication skills to provide instruction and direction to staff, to inform senior management of contentious issues, provide interpretation, advice, options, and recommendations, and to deliver presentations and training to diverse audiences.
- You have excellent written communication skills to respond to requests, prepare documents, reports, procedures, presentations and budgets using standard office software and tools.
- You have experience and have demonstrated tact, diplomacy, and political acuity in interpreting legislation/regulations in response to inquiries from the public, delegates from remote northern communities, clients, and numerous internal/external partners/stakeholders.
