Job Title: Interim Food and Beverage Manager
Job Overview: The Students’ Association of Olds College (SAOC) is mandated to promote the general welfare of students and to provide for the administration of student services, and one of our key student services is food & beverage operations. To that end, the Food & Beverage Manager (FBM) oversees all business at The Crossing Restaurant and Bloom Cafe. Reporting to the Executive Director, the FBM is responsible for stewarding SAOC’s food service operations in a manner consistent with the values and goals of the organization.
The FBM works closely with Crossing and Bloom leadership to monitor performance and maintain quality standards.
Experience in the hospitality industry is essential, and experience with event planning, student services, and financial resource management is considered a plus. Above all, the Food & Beverage Manager should have exceptional interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Please note that this is a temporary position to cover our permanent Food & Beverage Manager’s maternity leave.
Objectives of this role:
- Ensure the smooth operation of all food and beverage services with minimal need for intervention from the main office.
- Build and maintain a strong morale for staff and a welcoming, inclusive, safe culture for guests.
- Ensure compliance with bylaws, policies, regulations, and legal requirements in food & beverage service outlets.
- Work closely with the Head Chef and supervisors to enforce quality control standards, monitor inventory management and waste, and oversee front- and back-of-house operations.
- Work closely with the Student Experience Manager to regularly plan and host SAOC events in food & beverage spaces.
- Work closely with the Digital Engagement & Communications Manager to ensure that food and beverage products and services are effectively promoted to the student body.
Key responsibilities/outputs:
- Hire, train and schedule food & beverage staff in accordance with operational needs and budget, in conjunction with the Head Chef, Cafe Supervisor and Executive Director.
- Manage food & beverage staff,
including resolving conflicts as they arise and carrying out corrective action when necessary.
- Maintain the food & beverage department’s best practices by monitoring compliance with bylaws, policies and regulations, and by enforcing standard operating procedures.
- Document and monitor the effectiveness of training activities, and continually work to improve communication and onboarding practices.
- Oversee inventory management practices and support the Head Chef and supervisors in carrying out regular inventory and ordering processes.
- Participate in budgeting and goal-setting for the food & beverage department with the Executive Director.
- Manage the department’s performance against the annual budget. Achieve sales targets and manage expenses accordingly.
- Maintain the department’s point-of-sale system and update as necessary.
- Develop seasonal menus with the Head Chef and Cafe Supervisor and communicate menu specifications to the DECM.
- Attend SAOC events to coordinate and oversee food & beverage operations as necessary.
- Facilitate food & beverage services for SAOC event programming, including student club events and SAOC internal events.
- Seek out, organize, and execute catering events in a manner which supplements the food and beverage operations of The Crossing and Bloom Cafe and does not detract from regular business.
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting processes to demonstrate the department’s performance to the Executive Director and SAOC leadership.
- Attend and participate in regular meetings with fellow SAOC department heads.
- Host regular Food & Beverage team meetings.
- Act as a designated first aider when on-site at The Crossing Restaurant and Bloom Cafe.
Promote and enforce a culture of safety in food & beverage spaces.
Skills & qualifications:
- Diploma or higher education in hospitality management or related field.
- 2 years of experience in a related position.
- Valid ProServe, ProTect, and food safety certifications.
- Standard First Aid is considered an asset.
- Punctuality and consistency, especially pertaining to professional behavior.
- Belief in the value of student needs and opinions.
- Ability to use personal vehicle for business purposes is an asset. SAOC has an authorized drivers program and reimburses for business travel expenses.
Position type: Full time, temporary (contract ends April 30, 2027 with the possibility of extension). About SAOC: SAOC is an independent, non-partisan statutory corporation which operates in a not-for-profit fashion. We are incorporated by the Post-Secondary Learning Act to provide for the administration of student services and the promotion of the general welfare of the students of Olds College, who are our members. Our Board of Directors and Executive Council are Olds College students elected by their peers to serve one-year terms and set the strategic direction for the organization. This working board operates collaboratively with the Executive Director and core staff.
SAOC has four primary departments: governance, administration, food & beverage, and student experience. Our primary revenue source is membership fees, but we also own and operate two on-campus food service facilities, The Crossing Restaurant and Bloom Cafe. SAOC is currently located at 4500 50 St, Olds AB T4H 1R6.
