Transportation and Infrastructure - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador The Engineer is responsible for assisting the Chief Engineer in charge of the mechanical operation and maintenance of the engine room and its auxiliaries. The incumbent inspects, cleans and performs minor routine electronic, plumbing, mechanical and hydraulic repairs and maintenance in accordance with departmental preventative maintenance schedules; assist the Chief Engineer to ensure that back-up systems are in operational order; may accompany the vessel as required during refit schedules and assists technical personnel in carrying out repairs and alterations; assists with tie-up lines and other routine work during arrivals and departures of the vessel; participates in security watches when the vessel is non-operational; assist with operation of portable wharf lighting operation and vessel shore based genset operation and maintenance; and performs other related duties as required. Enters all work into the maintenance program daily and develop a refit specification to be entered in the maintenance program and submitted to the Marine Superintendent eight weeks prior to scheduled refit.

Use of a computer in the function of duties will be required. Engineers at this level may be called to serve in the capacity of Chief Engineer aboard smaller vessels.

Screening Criteria

Experience in marine engineering and the operation of marine diesel, hydraulic and electrical equipment in a marine setting
2. Experience working with up-to-date control systems
3. Valid 4th Class motor Engineer’s Certificate issued by Transport Canada or equivalent as determined by the Canada Shipping Act 2001 and applicable vessel Safe Manning Document
4. Valid Marine Medical Certificate
