Reporting to the Nurse Manager Inpatient Services, the Medical Clerk Interpreter is responsible for providing general assistance in clinical and patient areas and performs clerical and administrative duties as required. The incumbent is responsible for providing interpreting services in Inuktitut and English (both written and oral) between patients, nurses, doctors, laboratory, radiology and pharmacy staff, and other visitors to the hospital (example family). Positions in the inpatient unit are scheduled in 12 hours shift rotating schedule: 4 days on /4 days off and alternate between days and nights; weekdays and weekends.

Responsibilities The Medical Clerk Interpreter’s main responsibilities, include, but are but not limited to:

- Interpreting doctors, nurses, and other staff questions and explanations to patients and vice versa;

- Interpreting and explaining medical and nursing procedures to patients in their own language;

- Explaining medications and writing instructions in syllabics as required;





- Interpreting health counselling provided by medical and nursing staff;

- Assisting physicians and nurses in preparing patients for examinations;

- Assisting patients in understanding procedures and transferring them as needed;

- Assisting with feeding, weighing, and providing comfort measures to patients;

- Stocking, cleaning, and tidying patient care and utility areas;

- Interpreting during nurse-patient rounds and performing small clerical duties.

Qualifications The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are obtained through a high school diploma and Medical Terminology courses (Module 1-5). Assets include certifications in First Aid and basic CPR and office experience. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Written and verbal fluency in Inuktut and English is required. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit,



Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
