OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY TECHNICIAN

Position Status: 1.0 Regular Full-time, 12 month work year

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week

Affiliation: OSSTF District 25 - Educational Support Professionals (ESP)

Salary range: $64,280 to $80,877 per annum (Level 8)

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Team Manager, Occupational Health and Safety, the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S;) Technician is involved in various activities in support of the OCDSB OH&S; management system, including the implementation, maintenance and promotion of health and safety policies, procedures and initiatives at the District. The Technician investigates OH&S; concerns, conducts indoor air quality testing and other inspections, provides training/workshops to staff, liaises with Board personnel at all levels regarding OH&S; procedures, policies, and processes.

Qualifications

- Completion of a community college diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and a minimum of three (3) years of directly related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

- Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) is considered an asset.

- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario and Regulations, Ontario Environmental Protection Act and Regulations, the Ontario Fire Code, the Ontario Building Code and other relevant Acts, Regulations, Standards and OCDSB policies and procedures.





- Ability to communicate with and submit applicable documentation to outside agencies, such as Ottawa Fire Services, and Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, third-party contractors, and the Ontario Ministry of the Workplace Conservation and Parks to ensure regulatory compliance.

- Ability to conduct investigations related to occupational health and safety, including worker concerns, critical injuries, indoor air quality, workplace incidents and workplace violence, as necessary, and recommending corrective action verbally, or in writing, in an effort to reduce risks to workers and others.

- Ability to conduct inspections of various workplaces to identify areas for improvement and recommend appropriate control methods to employees at all levels, verbally or in writing.

- Ability to coordinate hazardous waste disposal activities.

- Sound understanding of basic emergency management standards and procedures.

- Knowledge of standard methods and procedures related to assessment of indoor air quality concerns.

- Ability to conduct environmental testing.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills required to respond to inquiries/concerns, provide advice to employees at all levels of the organization, and make presentations and conduct training/workshops. Must be able to use tact, diplomacy and discretion in daily interactions.

- Ability to use judgment and recognize potential hazardous situations and recommend a course of action.

- Strong organization and time management skills required for prioritizing multiple deadlines and demands.

- Strong written communication skills for preparing correspondence, reports, and training materials.

- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision

- Ability to gather, organize and store data related to the OH&S; management system, including, but not limited to, risk assessments, surveys, audits and other databases.

- Proficiency in the use of technology including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases and electronic mail.

- Access to reliable transportation is required for travel to Board sites.
